This state will be sending out checks
It is a good day to have a good day, especially when almost 8.6 million citizens will be receiving a once-off payment to help them cope with the extremely high cost of living. That’s right, folks, qualified citizens of the state of New York will be reaping the benefits of a state-approved “inflation refund” check. According to Governor Kathy Hochul, these checks are a result of New York state lawmakers reaching a budget approval after it was evident that the Empire State surprisingly received more money through sales tax due to increased consumer prices.
The inflation refund checks have an allocated fund of $2 billion and form part of the State of New York’s $254 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year. While the refund check is slightly less than originally discussed, it will still be a welcome addition to many qualifying citizens.
Only this group of citizens will qualify for the payments
According to Syracuse.com, all Empire State taxpayers who meet three crucial criteria will qualify for the checks regardless of whether they have a home or children. According to Hochul’s office, nearly 340,000 people in Central New York will qualify for the inflation refund checks.
Taxpayers will qualify for the inflation refund if:
- They filed their New York State Resident income tax return for the 2023 tax year (Form IT-201)
- Their reported income is within the income limits
- They were not claimed as a dependent on another tax return
The once-off checks will be welcomed by all the New Yorkers who had to pay increased sales taxes due to increased inflation. The payment date has been released, as well as how much the checks could potentially be.

“Starting in October, over 8 million New Yorkers will get an inflation refund because it’s simple — this is your money and we’re putting it back in your pockets. I’ll never stop fighting to help your family address the rising cost of living — and that’s why I also delivered on my promise to cut taxes for the middle class, expand the child tax credit and ensure free school meals for every student.” – Hochul said
According to the New York Taxation and Finance, those who meet the qualifying criteria will not have to do anything, as checks will be automatically sent. Start keeping an eye out for your check from mid-October 2025, as checks will be mailed over several weeks starting mid-fall.
