Who can ever forget the discovery that sparked the biggest mass migration in U.S. history, with more than 300,000 people arriving in California by the mid-1850s. This historic event was known as the California Gold Rush. This event significantly changed the state’s demographics and economy. Now history may repeat itself, as the gold rush returns, but this time it is white, and it is targeting three American regions. Will this pursuit change America for the good, or will it all be in vain?
This white gold will turn into a rush for this reason
The world’s energy demand has significantly increased. According to the International Energy Agency, the global energy demand grew by 2.2% in 2024, which is nearly double the rate of the previous decade’s average. The power sector steered the significant increase in energy demand, as its power demand increased by 4.3% in 2024.
Unfortunately, fossil fuels still account for nearly 60% of the global energy demand, with sources such as oil, coal, and gas playing a significant role. Fossil fuels are non-renewable, and they are a driving factor of global warming by releasing greenhouse gases. These gases result in severe water and air pollution, causing significant health problems, damage to ecosystems, and disrupting weather patterns, according to a report by Inspire Clean Energy.
This source is the white gold we have been looking for all along
This white gold is more specifically known as white hydrogen, but what exactly makes it “white?” Hydrogen is the most mysterious energy source in the world. There are different color categories to differentiate between the eco-friendliness of the different hydrogen types. White hydrogen naturally occurs, and the reason why this specific source is highly sought after is that it is the most cost-effective of all.
According to RystadEnergy, these are the average costs per kilogram (kg) associated with the different hydrogen types:
- Grey hydrogen (generated by fossil fuels) is $2 per kg
- Green hydrogen (generated by renewables) is more than three times as expensive per kg
“Although still in its infancy with lots of uncertainty, white hydrogen has the potential to be a gamechanger for the clean hydrogen sector as an affordable, clean natural resource, thereby shifting the role of hydrogen from an energy carrier to part of the primary energy supply.” – Minh Khoi Le, head of hydrogen research, Rystad Energy
The white gold rush is targeting these three American regions
According to RystadEnergy, the U.S. has three regions that have been selected for white hydrogen projects. These regions include:
- McCauley Field in Navajo County, Arizona
- Nehama Ridge in the Central United States, extending from near Omaha, Nebraska, to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
- Project Geneva on the margin of the Mid-Continent Rift System in Geneva, Nebraska
So, citizens of Arizona, Nebraska, and Oklahoma must brace themselves for an upcoming white gold rush. According to the USDA, these projects could stimulate local economies through job creation, infrastructure investment, and revenue production for local communities.
There may still be a considerable amount of uncertainty with regards to the future of white hydrogen’s contribution to meeting energy demands, but its benefit as the most cost-effective source has the potential to significantly decarbonize the energy sector in the U.S. As Texas is under the global spotlight for this white gold already, the U.S. energy sector could be seeing a major overhaul much sooner than anticipated.
