Tribal fisheries have depended on these fish for generations, and that dependence is inseparable from identity.

Its conclusion was stark: if current trends continue without meaningful intervention, whitefish could disappear entirely from some parts of the Great Lakes within five years. The silent mechanism: mussels starving an ecosystem

Understanding why whitefish are declining means looking well below the surface, to the base of the food web itself. Invasive zebra and quagga mussels don’t hunt whitefish or compete with them directly. Their damage is quieter and, in many ways, harder to reverse.

Mussels consume phytoplankton — the microscopic algae and bacteria that form the foundation of the aquatic food chain. As mussel populations have exploded across the Great Lakes, phytoplankton levels have collapsed, and that loss ripples upward. Diporeia, a small shrimp-like crustacean, depends on phytoplankton. Adult whitefish depend on diporeia. When the base disappears, every layer above it weakens.

Fewer young whitefish find enough food to survive into adulthood. Fewer adults means fewer spawning fish. The cycle compounds itself, and there’s no single point of intervention — no obvious lever to pull. The damage is distributed across an entire ecosystem, built up over decades, and still accelerating.

What scientists and agencies are trying

Researchers and wildlife officials aren’t waiting passively. Several approaches are being tested, though none has yet proven scalable enough to reverse the trend across the full Great Lakes system.

One promising finding involves freshwater drum, also known as sheephead. A study examining feeding patterns from 2013 to 2023 found that these fish consumed large numbers of zebra and quagga mussels in western Lake Erie, suggesting freshwater drum could serve as a natural biological check on mussel populations in certain areas. How far that effect can extend remains an open question.

Direct removal tactics are being tested as well. Ohio officials have placed large tarps over sections of the lakebed and pumped carbon dioxide beneath them to suffocate mussel colonies. High-pressure water jets have been used to blast mussel clusters from surfaces. Both methods have shown results in limited applications.

Scale is the problem. The Great Lakes cover roughly 94,000 square miles of surface water, and applying removal techniques across that entire system would require resources and logistics far beyond what current programs can support. The cost alone presents a significant barrier.

A narrow window to act

Five years isn’t much time. If no effective, scalable intervention emerges within that window, some parts of the Great Lakes may lose whitefish entirely — and with them, a web of ecological, economic, and cultural relationships that took centuries to develop.

The freshwater drum findings offer a thread worth pulling. The removal experiments offer proof of concept. Neither has yet produced a solution that can match the scale of the problem.

What happens next depends on whether research, funding, and political will can align quickly enough. For Indigenous communities, commercial fishers, and the broader Great Lakes region, the stakes extend well beyond ecology. Losing whitefish wouldn’t just alter the food web — it would alter the identity of a place. That’s the open question now: not whether the threat is real, but whether the response will arrive in time.
