Whether some of us want to admit it or not, 2025 has been a year. There have been a lot of social media reflections that this year has been full of ups and downs so far, and we couldn’t agree more. What we do not agree with is certain rumors that have spread on social media. Thankfully, the IRS has issued an official notice that some see as a “September blow.” The revenue service cleared all rumors, and we must now stop counting on a particular check and start looking elsewhere for some additional money.

This is why stimulus checks matter

The U.S. economy may have recovered much quicker than others around the world, but citizens are still financially struggling. This means that spending in the U.S. is not at the level it should be yet. According to CNBC, the middle class is particularly financially struggling, which is why 75% of middle-income households have cut back on non-essential spending.

According to Investopedia, this is why stimulus checks play a significant role in the greater economy. These checks can form part of a bigger federal stimulus package, which has been outlined to aid the economy, and are distributed to taxpayers by the U.S. government. An example is the stimulus checks that formed part of the 2021 American Rescue Plan.

Speaking of stimulus checks, there have been some rumors circling the media that U.S. citizens could expect a new check soon. According to the Hindustan Times, the rumors started after the recent IRS leadership changes, which had up to seven commissioners for 2025 so far. When considering that with Congress’s new tax laws, uncertainty and confusion are a given. Thankfully, the IRS has cleared a few things up.

IRS warns to stop counting on this check

These false rumors indicated that 2025 would see a fourth stimulus check, reportedly of $1,390, according to officials. These unsupported claims stated that citizens could expect these so-called stimulus checks in September 2025. While we hate being the bearers of bad news, the IRS has warned citizens to stop counting on these checks.

Neither the revenue service nor Congress has officially given any confirmation to support these speculations, and readers should be cautious when it comes to such false news, as it can be perceived as misinformation or attempted fraud. According to the Hindustan Times, the only payments that are being distributed are tax rebates for 2024 returns that have been filed. If you filed your 2024 tax return online before April 15, you can expect your rebate soon. This is what you should do if you did not receive your payment.

The one check that must still be confirmed

There is one particular check that must still be confirmed. According to PhillyBurbs.com, President Trump had an idea to utilize some of the government revenue from the new tariffs as a rebate check and to distribute it to taxpayers of a specific income level. These checks would be part of an initiative called the American Worker Rebate Act of 2025.

This initiative could still be possible, but it must still be passed by Congress. Missouri Republican Senator Josh Hawley submitted the Act, and if passed, American taxpayers can expect payments between $600 and $2,400. These rebates would be similar to the stimulus checks that were sent during the pandemic.

Remember, one must always fact-check any claims made on social media to prevent any false hope. According to financial experts, due to the economy’s large deficit and political disagreement, new stimulus checks for 2025 are unlikely. The IRS’s focus is currently on new tax credits and amendments, not direct deposits to citizens. On the other hand, some states are continuing to send stimulus checks to citizens, such as Governor Hochul’s new BABY Benefit in New York.
