If there is one automotive company that knows how to shake things up, it is Tesla. This time around it has made an announcement about its new service in California that will also benefit non-owners. Because it has been hailed as one of the best electric vehicle companies with “the best” car experience, they want the public to experience that too, even if they do not own a Tesla brand.
The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) gave Tesla access to operate its services in the state. It is a way to open doors for the operation of driverless taxi rides in California, but that is something still in the books and will be made available if necessary and if the required regulations are met by Tesla.
Tesla’s new service: A revolution in ridesharing with a modern twist
With a modern and futuristic twist, Tesla’s services are set to function like any traditional or ordinary transportation service. This time around, the EV company has been very thoughtful and included the general public (non-owners), and they can use the specified app to request a ride to their desired destination. The EV company has always had this exclusivity concept about themselves, but to see them include everyone marks a change in what they believe in.
Tesla is an EV company; therefore, the cars used for this new service in California are fully electric. This sets the standard for the business to show that it is eco-friendly and provides customers with a clean ride too. No one has to feel like the environment is being jeopardised. According to a report by Wired, Tesla has the desire to have a self-driving vehicle; however, this new service will have a driver inside to monitor the vehicle.
According to Inside EVs, in November 2024, Tesla submitted an application for a transport charter permit (TCP). The commission claims that this kind of permission enables businesses to provide scheduled transportation services, such as round-trip sightseeing. Experts state that this is not a new venture or strategy but a calculated move by Musk to easily introduce a fully autonomous “robotaxi” network.
The importance of accessibility and affordability for everyone, even for non-owners
I do not know if the protests happening in the United States and parts of France have pushed for this; however, the way Tesla has initiated inclusivity is the grand moment for everyone right now. Tesla has always had this notion that the brand is meant to be used and bought by the rich and wealthy. So, if you belong to a low class, you cannot afford a Tesla or cannot associate yourself with the brand.
However, seeing Elon Musk make this move feels quite political, a calculated strategy, and obviously inclusive. Now, everyone can experience premium and advanced technology. This now means California has got more options for vehicle rides, and that is, Uber Lyft and the new kid in town, Tesla. It will also create a fair environment and healthy competition.
The Catch: Public scepticism and regulatory obstacles
Excitement aside, this permit for Tesla has come with some tight regulations. One of them is that the vehicles need to have a driver behind the steering wheel. For now, let us put the self-driving vehicle aside, as this will take time and because of red tape, it is just another segment of regulations that Tesla will need to deal with in the future.
Additionally, there has been some criticism regarding the Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology. Many believe that Elon Musk and Tesla are not yet ready, and failing to meet the expected regulation just means they need to refocus. The public has also generally not been happy with the car brand, causing protests and Tesla’s facilities being burnt down. Whether it is funded or planned, there has just been a lot of bad energy around Tesla lately.
