We live in a world that is always evolving and exposing some of the most interesting facts about nature; however, Earth is not as mysterious as the ocean. Recently, researchers discovered something: a ‘Glass-made’ creature that appeared after the iceberg’s collapse. It left experts speechless as they witnessed theory come to life. Scientists did not witness another NASA discovery or a universal mystery, but a living, breathing, moving “glass-made” creature. The first image of a colossal squid in its natural environment was captured by scientists a century later, after being identified and named by previous researchers.
The ‘Glass’ Squid: A ghost beneath the waters
In January 2025, the iceberg A-84 broke and separated from Antarctica, which, of course, under normal circumstances, added another chunk of ice in the Southern Ocean. However, something happened and triggered scientists. A pristine marine creature was identified in the ecosystem. Something that was last seen over a century ago. For ocean scientists, it was an opportunity placed on a silver platter.
According to News Channel 3, SuBastian, a remotely operated vehicle that was sent out on an excursion by the institute’s research vessel, Falkor (too), took the video in March. This juvenile squid is approximately one foot (30 centimetres) long, while the giant squid is believed to reach a maximum length of 23 feet (7 metres) and a maximum weight of 1,110 pounds (500 kilograms), making it the heaviest squid species on Earth.
The giant squid reflects light in a way that it appears transparent to the naked eye. It looks like glass and is very much alive. It is living and one of the rarest animals ever discovered by animal experts. The reason why it appears like glass is because of its special way of adaptive camouflage that has developed over the years due to the conditions found in the deep, cold ocean and dark habitat.
More ocean secrets could be revealed by Icebergs breaking off
Something as simple as ice breaking off from Antarctica could reveal more mysteries and secrets than we have ever seen or imagined. It took a simple ice break for this mysterious wonder to be identified, and while we are at it, it is important to note that global warming has contributed to this. How? Well, the world is getting warmer, and icy regions are melting, but it has created an opportunity for researchers. It was a win-win situation.
Another striking moment for this discovery is that for all these years, scientists have had very limited direct observations of this type of species; therefore, it marks a remarkable discovery. Now, there is a greater understanding of the species. Further research can be done using something living and tangible, and not based on assumptions from years ago.
There is more that the ocean is hiding, and it will take either a short or a longer time to discover it. It took 100 years for scientists to discover this glass creation, did it not? Therefore, we need to know that we will never be able to know everything about Earth and its secrets. Additionally, we should give technology enough credit for making it easy for researchers to work on some of these findings and to be able to look for anything that could be of interest.
Two discoveries reveal a remarkable juvenile squid
Additionally, a second finding was made. The study team experienced two lightning strikes when they captured the first-ever video of a juvenile giant squid on March 9, 2025, while on a follow-up excursion. Despite having the same transparent look and sharp hooks as its glass squid cousin, this second unusual squid species is a member of a much larger species that may grow up to 7 metres in length, according to an article by the Stewartville Star. In a world that sometimes makes noise about space discoveries, it is lovely to see Earth’s most humbling creatures still there waiting to be identified.
