Being more than just a purple solar panel, solar solutions that actually work all year round have come about. They are providing us with free energy at home this winter, even when the snow falls. We have often assumed that solar panels automatically stop working once they are fully covered in snow; however, modern systems have been created to be far more resilient. Citizens have come to realize that even when temperatures freeze, sunlight can still penetrate thin layers of snow, allowing the solar panels to generate power.

Winter won’t affect solar panel performance anymore

While it is often believed that solar panels stop working during winter, all photovoltaic cells are seen as being more efficient when the air turns cold. However, the older solar panels found thick snow to be rather challenging, as the thick layers of snow prevented sunlight from getting to the solar panels. Many solar panel buyers did not realize that panels tended to get warm even when receiving very minimal sunshine. This meant the snow ended up sliding off the angled solar panels, making the panels effective yet again.

For most solar panels, snow only temporarily hinders the panel’s ability to work efficiently, and once the snow melts, the panel will be effective again. However, many new solar manufacturers have considered the problem of snow affecting solar performance and are looking at more lucrative solar options.

An Australian wind farm caused chaos when it switched from generating power to something quite different and ended up in court, and now operates under a nighttime ‘curfew’

Someone thought covering the Sahara with 10 million solar panels was a good idea. Now they’re creating dark rain clouds and reshaping the climate

A hydroelectric dam in the Amazon was operating normally until millions of fish began disappearing and it was suddenly abandoned overnight

A fresh and flexible approach to solar woes

The rise in organic photovoltaic modules (OPV) means that these lightweight and flexible cells are seen as being purposeful. The photovoltaic modules have a slight turquoise hue. As opposed to the thicker panels, these panels were developed at times when installation and repair were problematic.

With efficiency lower than silicon systems, the OPV modules are still preferred due to their flexibility and the fact that these cells are easily repairable. One of the most noticeable features of these panels is their color gradient, which improves absorption considerably, even when the weather does not seem ideal.

An efficient and independent winter solar option

Solar installations that are suitable for winter are excellent when shifting towards energy independence. There are firms specializing in heat pumps, photovoltaics, and energy storage, and they are considering making the solar option an all-year-round solution. One of the main firms specializing in more modern European solar solutions is SunHelp Energy.

Now, the newer design principles of organic photovoltaic modules (OPV) are impacting the decisions taken by many mainstream solar manufacturers. The best option for many households is to combine winter-resistant panels with high-efficiency inverters and other energy storage options to minimize electricity costs. Thus, fossil fuels will be less relied on than all the other possible solutions during peak power times.

Winter certainly can no longer hinder the performance of solar panels. With the Alps having been covered with solar panels and yielding unexpected results,  we know that Europe has already achieved the impossible, and now the photovoltaic segment is re-examining the possibilities of ensuring independent solar solutions.

An overall advanced solar panels approach

Solar energy research has advanced considerably, and we have solar panel options that expand beyond the solar panel ranges of the past. Today, we even have purple OPV panels that tend to work well on snowy days.

Winter is no longer a problem for the OPV panels, so the solar investment is a smart option. Investing in a winter solar panel is an option towards a lifetime investment in long-term energy independence. With the option of making any surface photovoltaic, we have yet to see if the newer purple sheet will spell the end of solar panels.
