530,000 kWh per year — Japan builds world’s first solar chimney covered by 5,000 panels and it works

Japan has a reputation for pushing the envelope when it comes to clean energy. This country developed a bold energy project.  They did this years ago, and the project still functions. They began working on this before solar panels really took off around the world. This energy project is still an exciting one.

This is a fresh take on solar energy. They were able to establish this solar project back in 2008. This project was and is a daring project, but not done as a PR stunt or anything like that. 5,000 solar panels that can generate 530,00kWk per year. It has such a dramatic design that you wouldn’t be able to miss it.

This is environmental engineering at its finest. In Gifu Prefecture, you will find the energy project called the Solar Ark. It is a solar chimney built into a piece of architecture. People see it today and still think it is a brand-new structure, but it isn’t.

What makes the Solar Ark such a special energy project?

This energy project has been making an impact for over a decade now. The structure stretches for almost half a kilometer. A curved frame holds 5,000 solar panels. The most impressive part of it is the chimney. The chimney uses the warm air that rises to keep the temperature inside the Solar Ark at a decent level. This helps boost energy flow.

This concept was unheard of when the Solar Ark was first erected. Experts still marvel at it. The building’s solar panels work in unison. A single solar energy surface. It produces enough clean energy to give power to 150 Japanese homes every year. On an average day, the Solar Ark can yield 1,400 kilowatt-hours. It does all that while also being used as office space and an exhibition hall.

In 2008, solar panels were not as good as the ones we have today. Experts still managed to do the most with what they had. The levels of energy the Solar Ark provides stands up against modern solar panels. Mid-sized ones at least. The shape of the building played a big part in this.

It is angled to catch as much sunlight as possible. The solar chimney moves heat through the building, which helps as well. Extra energy needed to cool the building down is cut down by that. The Solar Ark was ahead of its time. Every bit of energy it creates is used well.

The Solar Ark is a monument to Japan’s devotion to clean energy

Japan was aware of what the world would be moving towards as far as clean energy. The solar chimney isn’t just for show. Yes, it does make quite a statement, but it is an important part of how the building works. The solar chimney draws in cool air as the warm air rises through the building. This makes it less hot inside.

Inside the Solar Ark, displays on renewable energy have been set up. This is to educate people on the importance of renewable energy. Research programs and events are hosted at the Solar Ark. This is all to educate and bring awareness to clean energy. The building has not been left to just stand there. The Solar Ark might look more modern in design today than it did in 2008.

This is a great example of a forward-thinking nation doing what it can to lower emissions and place importance on the environment. The Solar Ark caught the attention of the world back then, as it still does today. It is a crisp idea, but more than that, it still works.
