Tesla changed the way people think about cars. Electric vehicles went from unusual to mainstream, and Elon Musk played a major role in that shift. But even with all of Tesla’s innovation, Musk says there is one vehicle the company will never build. His reason is short and clear: “We can’t make it safe.”
Musk’s Tesla continues to dominate the EV sector
For years, Musk’s Tesla dominated the electric vehicle (EV) sector, being the global leader of electric vehicle sales by a landslide. While the company has recently been surpassed in terms of global sales by Chinese EV manufacturer BYD, Tesla has retained its position as the leading US producer of electric vehicles.
“In the fourth quarter, we produced over 434,000 vehicles, delivered over 418,000 vehicles and deployed 14.2 GWh of energy storage products – a record for deployments,” describes Tesla’s Fourth Quarter 2025 Production, Deliveries, and Deployments report.
The unprecedented success which Tesla saw with the release of its first electric vehicles, further, was a major catalyst to encourage other automobile developers to begin developing alternative engine solutions. Today, the hybrid electric engine remains the most popular alternative engine model among American consumers, with hybrid electric vehicle sales nearly doubling between 2022 and 2024 alone. However, fully electric vehicle sales continue to rise year on year.
Why Musk says one vehicle is “never happening” at Tesla
With Tesla’s major success in the EV market thanks to their advanced battery engine solutions, the company has gone on to develop other products such as solar panels, home battery storage, EV charging infrastructure, and grid-scale energy storage units. However, the company has yet to explore an electric ‘Tesla’ motorcycle, and it looks as if they won’t do so anytime soon, despite competition from other automobile developers such as German and Japanese developers BMW and Honda, respectively.
“[It’s] never happening, as we can’t make motorcycles safe,” said Musk on social media platform X in response to an AI video about a fake Tesla motorcycle.
Musk described in the social media post how an electric Tesla motorcycle will not be seen on the roads anytime soon due to the unsafe nature of the vehicles, referencing his own experience of nearly being killed by a truck when riding a motorcycle years ago. In 2023, motorcyclist fatalities reached an all-time high, accounting for 15% of all traffic fatalities, according to data by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Where Tesla is choosing to focus instead
Rather than entering categories Musk considers too risky, Tesla continues to invest heavily in areas where technology can improve safety and efficiency. These include electric cars, autonomous driving software, large-scale energy storage, charging infrastructure, and renewable energy systems.
The company also places strong emphasis on supporting existing customers, offering guidance and software features designed to improve driving performance in challenging conditions such as extreme cold, snow, and ice.
What this decision reveals about Tesla’s future
Tesla is often associated with bold promises and futuristic ideas, but Musk’s stance on motorcycles highlights an important boundary. For him, innovation must still meet basic safety standards, even if the technology itself is impressive.
As Tesla continues to shape the future of electric vehicles and clean energy, its path forward appears focused on refining what it already does best — not expanding into every possible form of transportation. And while fans may continue to imagine what else Tesla could build, Musk has made one thing clear: some vehicles, no matter how exciting, are simply not worth the risk.
