NASA launches massive planetary alert ― ISS is ‘under attack’ and this is the worrying phenomenon

What I am about to elaborate on is real and not science fiction or a story from a movie. NASA has issued a planetary alert due to a developing problem at the International Space Station (ISS), which is caused by a mysterious leak in a critical Russian module. Russia is not willing to take action or assist with the problem. This crisis comes at a bad time, considering that the Trump Administration claimed that it would cut 20% of NASA’s funding, as reported by Yahoo News. The attack comes from within, that being technological ageing, international tension, and a hazardous environment 250 miles above Earth.

The International Space Station has previously encountered a similar threat

In 2022, the same issue was raised. NASA sent a warning about a possible “catastrophic failure” with the leaky ISS, but Russia refused to fix it. According to Live Science, Russia and NASA have known about this leak since the year 2019, and since then, they have not discovered the root problem. Cosmonauts tried their level best to fix this issue by trying to close off the segment (sealing), but NASA and Roscosmos have been in disputes because of it.

Bob Cabana, the chair of the agency’s ISS Advisory Committee, said during a public meeting that ISS’s deterioration could lead to “a catastrophic failure” of the station.

Take this into mind: the International Space Station (ISS) has been constantly occupied since 2000; therefore, you can imagine 25 years of mechanical stress and no break at all. Research reports also claim that the perforation may have been caused by additional stress from crashing into tiny debris fragments and micrometeoroids. Hence, NASA launched a massive planetary alert.

By 2030, NASA wants to deorbit the ISS, but Elon Musk is against it

NASA and scientists have long been worried because of the station’s cracks, and over the years, they identified air leaks, and one of the ways they were able to detect it was with the help of floating tea leaves.

Furthermore, NASA wants to deorbit the ISS by 2030; however, tech billionaire Elon Musk recommended that the station be deorbited sooner, expressing that the station “served its purpose”, as reported by Yahoo News.

The silence surrounding the solution is the issue, not just the leak.

The ISS is ‘under attack’ and this is a worrying phenomenon. When you look deep into it, this is not supposed to be a headline; however, it is beyond just a leak, but the politics surrounding NASA and Russia, and other components involved that have not been mentioned in reports. A good example: Elon Musk stated that when it comes to having a conversation regarding the 20% budget cut made by Trump, he cannot get involved because of a conflict of interest.

Another thing: the silence from Russia is the issue. While NASA has reached out to Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, nothing has come back as a form of communication whatsoever, just silence. No plan has been disclosed, or anything that they can implement in the meantime. No one is taking action or addressing that major issue as soon as possible.

Live Science claims that in 2022, NASA and Roscosmos decided to seal off the leaky part if the pace of air loss became “untenable”. However, they have yet to agree on the precise definition of an intolerable rate. According to NASA, air is currently escaping from the space station at a rate of about 2 to 2.5 pounds (0.9 to 1.1 kilograms) per day over its equilibrium. It briefly increased to 3.7 pounds per day (1.7 kg) in April 2022; if unchecked, it may increase once again. Additionally, a strong budget will be needed right now if they do decide to deorbit the ISS, considering the amount of money they spend investing in it.
