It’s true: Nuclear era, chapter two — Palisades inches closer to reopening after a historic shutdown

Palisades nuclear era closer

As attention seems to be falling on the nuclear era, Palisades is inching closer to reopening its nuclear plant. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, the plant’s reopening timeline has had to be adjusted after falling slightly behind schedule. Despite the delay in the plant’s reopening, it is still a significant leap following the historic shutdown of this nuclear initiative in 2022. Now, Michigan will revisit the power of nuclear to generate electricity yet again.

Moving from halted operations to the reinitiation of the project

The Palisades plant was able to provide power to over 800,000 homes and businesses before closing in 2022, after operating for over 50 years. The restarting of the nuclear plant would mean that the first U.S. commercial reactor would restart following its sudden closure. Holtec International, owner of the plant, estimated that the facility would contribute energy to the grid by October 2025. However, due to delays, the nuclear plant is said to be operational in February or March this year.

This decision has come along with decisions to open other reactors, so that the possibility of expanding nuclear power on the grid becomes a reality. Should all go well this year, the Palisades will be the first nuclear plant to return to normal service.

A new timeline is in the pipeline with a focus on 2026

While Holtec International had been ambitious about the plant’s restart, plans had fallen slightly behind schedule. The return to power initially planned for 2025 has been pushed back, with a more realistic timeline now set. One of the key setbacks was due to cracks inside thousands of tubes from the steam generators. This was a critical setback as steam generators are used to transfer heat from the reactor to produce steam. The damage has led critics to believe that these cracks were the result of poor management during the shutdown period, and as such, critics advise that a full generator replacement is required.

Nevertheless, workers have been hard at work reassembling some of the key components to ensure that the plant is operating well and to insert sleeves into the tubes to remedy the problem.

How will the Palisades plant assist in this nuclear era?

The federal government has even set aside about R1.52 billion in loans devoted to restarting the Palisades nuclear plant. This option has been the best thus far, as new nuclear plants tend to take more than a decade to build. If power production is restored, this nuclear plant will be able to generate up to 800 megawatts that will then be used to power over a thousand homes. Supporters feel that nuclear assets can become a reliable source of power.

Nuclear power seems to be gaining much popularity, not only in America, but in Africa, too. Africa’s new nuclear giant is a 4 GW project that will change the continent’s energy map.

The restart of a plant that stopped operating in 2022

Although the Palisades nuclear plant failed to meet its set target for 2025, the pushback on this project by four months is not too bad a setback for the restart of a plant that has been offline for the last few years. There are people rather skeptical about restarting nuclear projects due to the many nuclear plants’ recent history of costs.

If the plans for restarting the plant in February or March hold up, this could be quite an iconic restart of a plant that has been out of service for a while. It will also be a monumental moment for nuclear plants around the U.S. Since nuclear energy has somewhat made a re-entry in the energy sector in 2025, nuclear power will soon set off more alarm bells in America as the country continues to transition from coal to nuclear.
