A total of 37.9 million people in the U.S. are affected by poverty, according to the latest data from the Census Bureau. People from varying demographics are affected, including minimum wage earners, people with limited income, and people who have lost their jobs. Thankfully, one eligible group will get a new $725 deposit on Monday, which will continue for ten straight months. This event will be a most welcome one in a county where low-income families are extremely dependent on financial aid.
This county counts on financial aid for this reason
In a particular U.S. state’s county, 15.4% of children live in poverty, according to a 2024 Data USA report. Any child living in poverty has to face negative economic realities, which inevitably impact their health and education, and these impacts can persist into their adulthood. According to the Child Poverty Action Group, after the Child Tax Credit ended in 2021, the child poverty rate significantly increased in the area.
Economic Realities
- Housing instability and food insecurity are typical results of poverty, which impact a child’s well-being and thriving ability
Health Impacts
- They often experience poor mental health and psychological distress
- They are more susceptible to childhood illness, which could result in health issues later in life
Educational Challenges
- They have a higher risk for speech, learning, and emotional development issues that can continue into their adult lives
- They typically attend underfunded schools with fewer resources, resulting in inequality in academic achievement
- A child’s ability to concentrate and learn effectively is influenced by factors such as food insecurity and lack of educational resources
Addressing the county’s child poverty
To address the county’s child poverty rate, low-income families residing in Sacramento County can count on the Family First Economic Support Pilot (FFESP)’s financial contribution each month. After reviewing the eligibility requirements, 200 randomly-selected families will receive $725 each, which will continue every month for one full year.
Other eligibility requirements for the FFESP
- Your household has at least one child between the ages of 0 and 5
- The child lives with you at least 50% of the time
- Your household income is below 200% the federal poverty line
- You reside in one of the following eligible zip codes
- 5815, 95821, 95823, 95825, 95828, or 95838
According to The Economic Times, citizens of certain ethnic groups were given priority during selection due to their increased contact with the child welfare system. These groups include Black, African American, American Indian, or Alaska Native citizens. This decision helps to address the inequality faced by families of color.
This is when eligible citizens can expect their deposit
According to Sacramento County’s Department of Child, Family, and Adult Services, beneficiaries of the FFESP can expect their next deposit on Monday, August 15, 2025. Eligible beneficiaries officially have 10 rounds of payments left for their year of financial aid, which will end in July 2026. According to Marca, beneficiaries will receive their deposits in accordance with their preference:
- Direct deposit, or
- Usio debit card, or
- Bank accounts at SAFE Credit Union
This program is the right step forward to addressing the child poverty rate. The FFESP allows low-income families with children to afford essentials such as transportation, food, and basic services. It also offers more, including connection to community organizations and support groups, and financial counselling, which allows the improvement of families’ economic and emotional stability.
Financial aid programs such as Sacramento’s FFESP are crucial local initiatives to bridge social gaps in communities and to assist low-income households living in poverty in an era of increasing inflation rates and a high cost of living. These programs also help decrease contact with child welfare, helping to keep families together. California is not the only state with such a program. The state of New York will also pay it forward by distributing stimulus checks of $1,000 to qualifying families.
