They were inulin and fructooligosaccharide, better known as FOS.

FOS is a natural carbohydrate so mild it doubles as a sweetener in some foods.
The two were combined into a single daily blend of inulin and FOS.
After 12 weeks, that blend had clearly reshaped the gut.
One bacterium in particular stood out in the results.
It is a microbe long tied to a healthy gut in older people.
The beneficial Bifidobacterium had grown far more plentiful in the twins on the plant fiber.
What the fiber did to their memory
Here is the part nobody had designed the trial to find.
Three months in, the twins on the fiber scored higher on a cognitive test.
The gains clustered around memory, the very function families fear losing with age.
That is the kind of change families notice long before any scan does.
The test they took was not just any quiz.
According to one report, the trial used a visual memory and learning task from a clinical battery.
That same task helps doctors detect early signs of Alzheimer’s disease.
Studies in mice suggest Bifidobacterium can ease cognitive decline by tuning the gut brain link.
Think of the bacterium as a maintenance crew for the connections memory depends on.
A cheap daily fiber had nudged a measure doctors watch closely, and it did it in just 12 weeks.
The honest caveat, and what it means
The result is genuinely exciting, but it comes with a boundary worth knowing.
The cognitive gain was a secondary finding, not the point of the study.
The trial was actually built to test muscle function in older bodies.
Its designers were chasing strength and mobility, not brain health at all.
On that primary goal, the fiber showed no significant benefit over placebo.
The study was also small, and its participants were mostly women.
According to one account, the team acknowledged possible selection bias in the group.
A single trial is never the whole story, and a prebiotic is no treatment for dementia.
The wonder of these hidden systems keeps surfacing elsewhere, from clever octopuses to the seals around an offshore wind farm.
What this fiber may be is an accessible starting point, something ordinary to add to a daily routine.
