Somewhere off the coast of Sulawesi, a diver tips forward over the side of a wooden boat.
No tank, no wetsuit.
Just a carved wooden mask, a breath held at the surface, and a set of weights to pull them down.
Divers from this community have been recorded working past 230 feet on a single breath.
They surface, rest briefly, and go back down, over and over, until the working day ends.
The organ that makes that routine possible sits under the left ribs.
What the spleen does every time a diver goes under
The spleen is a fist sized organ tucked under the left ribs, usually described as a filter for aging blood cells. That is true as far as it goes. But it also stores a reserve of red blood cells that can be pushed into the circulation the moment the body needs more oxygen than the lungs are supplying.
Submerging on a held breath triggers a cascade of changes called the diving reflex. The heart rate drops, blood is shunted away from the skin and toward the central organs, and the spleen contracts, releasing its reserve cells into the stream. A bigger spleen means a bigger reservoir.
More red blood cells held in reserve means more oxygen delivered with each contraction, which means more seconds at depth before the urge to breathe turns the diver back toward air. The spleen is, in effect, a portable oxygen tank built into the body.
The organ that grew to match the job
A doctoral student who traveled to the Bajau village of Jaya Bakti found that Bajau spleens ran roughly 50 percent larger than those of their land dwelling Saluan neighbors. The gap was striking on its own, but the more surprising detail was which Bajau it applied to.
The enlargement was not confined to people who dive for a living. It showed up in Bajau who had never made a working dive, which pointed away from training effects and toward something carried by the population itself. A body that grows a larger spleen only when pushed is telling a story about exercise.
A body that arrives with one is telling a story about inheritance.
The gene that explains the size difference
The work was published in the journal Cell in 2018, based on spleen measurements from 59 Bajau and 34 people from a neighboring village, alongside DNA samples from both groups. One variant stood out: PDE10A, which codes for an enzyme that mediates smooth muscle contraction and is also associated with thyroid hormone release. “We think the way it works is that the expression of this variant gene changes thyroid hormone release, which then has an effect on spleen size,” said Rasmus Nielsen, one of the senior researchers.
That chain is proposed rather than settled. A later mouse experiment produced larger spleens by blocking PDE10A with a drug, but its authors write that the exact mechanism remains unknown.
Other researchers have cautioned that spleen size is unlikely to be governed by a single gene. Linguistic analysis suggests the Bajau have lived this way for more than a thousand years, which gives natural selection considerable time to work.
The numbers that stay strange no matter how many times you read them
Some Bajau spend as much as 60 percent of their working day diving for food, spearing fish and octopus and gathering crustaceans and sea cucumbers, at depths beyond 230 feet with only weights and a wooden mask. For context, recreational scuba training agencies cap certified divers at 130 feet with a tank on their back.
Individual dives are not necessarily longer than those of other breath hold divers. What stands out is the frequency, and how little recovery sits between one descent and the next. The lead researcher has said the closest comparison for underwater working time is not another human group but sea otters.
“I’m not sure anyone was really expecting to get a positive result, simply because these kinds of adaptations are relatively rare in modern humans,” the study’s lead author said. The signal turned up anyway, written into breath hold biology.
What this means for anyone who has ever felt out of breath
The diving reflex is not exclusive to the Bajau. Every person carries a version of it, and every person’s spleen contracts during a breath hold in water. The difference is one of degree, shaped by a thousand years of living off the seabed.
Researchers hope the Bajau’s physiology can inform medicine for people who face temporary oxygen shortfalls, including those caused by sleep apnea and brain injury. The same organ and the same reflex operate in every human body, and the study of people who carry a larger one has become a window into extreme physiology that no laboratory could have designed on its own.
What the Bajau have shown is that evolution did not stop shaping human bodies when people built houses and cities. Off the coast of Sulawesi, on a wooden boat at first light, it is still at work.
