SNAP bans hit 6 states

We live in an economically challenged time, where thousands of citizens struggle to make ends meet. Inflation rates continue to rise, and the cost of living is making it nearly impossible to afford essentials such as groceries, housing, and healthcare. Thankfully, SNAP benefits have financially assisted many families in times of need; however, a ban has now been implemented in six states. This ban will affect some people, as certain items will no longer be available for purchase. Many people, however, are applauding this ban.

What are SNAP benefits?

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is an American anti-hunger program that has been assisting more than 41 million Americans over the past few years. The program has a history that dates back to 1939, when it was originally known as the Food Stamp Program (FSP). The FSP essentially allowed citizens on relief to purchase orange stamps, which equalled their usual food spending.

Some of these stamps allowed them to purchase certain food items, while others had no limitations. The current SNAP program is very similar, as it also allows citizens to purchase certain items, but only if they meet certain requirements. The program is available in many states across the U.S.; however, numerous states have been implementing SNAP bans, which will affect more citizens than expected.

Only qualifying citizens would benefit from the program

According to the USDA Food and Nutrition Services, to qualify for the program and its benefits, citizens have to meet certain requirements, including resource and income limits. These requirements ensure that only low-income households who struggle to make ends meet are assisted financially, and that others do not take unnecessary advantage.

Requirements to benefit from SNAP

Citizens must be registered for work or participate in a state-assigned employment and training program. Households in the 48 neighboring states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands must also meet the following monthly net income limits:

  • Households of 1 – Up to $1,255 monthly
  • Households of 2 – Up to $1,704 monthly
  • Households of 4 – Up to $2,600 monthly
  • Households of 6 – Up to $3,497 monthly
  • Households of 8 – Up to $4,394 monthly

Each additional member would allow an additional $449 to the limit. Qualifying citizens, or households, will then receive monthly benefits to buy for as long as their certification period allows. Only certain items will be allowed for purchase, but after the ban, the list of allowable items is considerably shorter.

Beneficiaries will no longer be able to buy this due to the ban

Thanks to the Trump Administration, six more states have implemented the ban after the announcement to “strengthen integrity and restore nutritional value within the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).” The ban, officially known as the SNAP Food Restriction Waivers, will restrict beneficiaries from purchasing non-nutritious items in an attempt to promote healthier habits.

The Trump Administration has been implementing a variety of changes over the past few months, some for the better, some not as much. Hopefully, these particular changes will encourage healthier eating habits and an overall healthier lifestyle across the country, especially for households with children who require plentiful nutrients as they grow and develop.
