From the ocean floor to the Virginia state — 2.6 million kW offshore to power 600,000 homes

Virginia's offshore wind project moves ahead

Virginia is the latest state in the US to accelerate the adoption of the wind energy sector. This comes as the United States has seen the wind power sector effectively stangled by permitting rollback by the federal government under the directive from Donald Trump. Trump has essentially ended the progress made in embracing the wind power sector in America made under the previous administration. However, Virginia is standing firm in the face of adversity and has noted that a substantial wind project is moving ahead unabated.

Donald Trump’s disdain for the wind energy sector has become all too real

Long before Trump even thought about running for the Presidency, he expressed his disdain and disgust for wind turbines, saying they polluted the beautiful coastlines around the world. He even went so far as to state that wind turbines cause high numbers of deaths of bird life, and that wind turbines are “driving the whales a little bit batty”, whatever that may mean.

Mr Trump’s position on wind energy has not changed since taking office; in fact, he has doubled down on his sentiment for wind power and has rolled back the significant permits granted under the Biden administration. Regardless of the President’s feelings for the sector, Virginia has been developing an astonishing wind power project that will reshape the regional energy supply.

In Australia, extreme heat is killing millions of birds, and some are now surviving by sheltering on solar panels

Seabirds are abandoning waters with wind turbines, and 256,000 have already vanished without a trace

Ohio approved more wind and solar permits than any state studied but also killed more projects than any other

Construction on Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind is moving ahead at full speed

The Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project has been advancing at a steady pace since being approved by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management in 2024. The project will be anchored in Hampton Roads and has the added benefit of being the largest offshore wind project in the United States, marking the sentiment that Virginia has for the wind power sector.

The Virginia wind project has passed all the relevant regulatory hurdles

Ensuring the success of the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project has been paramount for the project’s management. In 2013, BOEM held a competitive lease sale offshore Virginia, and Dominion Energy was selected as the winner of the lease that spans 112,799 acres, located 23.5 nautical miles offshore Virginia in federal waters.

Notably, on January 28, 2024, BOEM approved the Construction and Operations Plan for the project, allowing for the construction process to begin. With the construction heading towards a completion date in the near future, management has noted that once operations begin and the project actually starts producing energy, it will provide enough electricity to power up to 660,000 homes.

The 176 offshore wind turbines are set to be completed in 2026 and could completely reshape the regional energy mix, as Virginia is one of the few states that have wind power ambitions in the United States. Harvesting energy from the ocean and winds that blow through the US can assist in energy security in a world that has seen demand for clean energy rising like the tides in Virginia’s coast.

“We are committed to safely providing an all-of-the-above mix of power generation sources to meet rising power demand, including offshore wind, to provide our customers with reliable, affordable and increasingly clean energy.” – Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind statement

While some US states have adopted the solar sector, Virginia has embraced wind power

The progress being made in Virginia exemplifies the embrace of renewable energy in the state, and with other US states expressing their own interest in the renewable energy market, the regional supply of clean energy is growing. The hindrance to the progress of the renewable energy market by Donald Trump has not affected every US state, as New York has begun its solar revolution with its huge and astonishing million-panel, 500,000 kW project. So the President might want to reconsider his perception of the sector, but we make no guarantees.
