The bed is tilted, but not the way anyone would guess.
The head end sits lower than the feet, by an angle you would struggle to see across a room.
Nobody lying in it is ill.
They came here on purpose, they are being compensated, and the one rule is that they never sit up, not once, for two months.
That angle is doing all of the work.
Why 6 degrees is enough to fool a body
Standing upright, gravity pulls fluid downhill all day. Roughly two quarts of blood sit lower in you than they otherwise would, held there by the planet alone.
Take that pull away and it goes back up. That is the puffy face and thin legs in every astronaut photograph, and it happens within hours of orbit.
So a 6 degree head down tilt reproduces it on the ground. The angle is small enough to sleep in and steep enough that fluid drifts to the chest and stays, and the sensors that judge blood volume read that as far too much. The kidneys start disposing of it, and plasma volume falls 10 to 15 percent.
Meanwhile nothing loads the legs. Bone and muscle only hold themselves against resistance, so a body kept horizontal begins writing off whatever it stopped using, exactly as a long spaceflight makes it.
What sixty days of not sitting up looks like
The rule sounds simple until you walk a day through it. Meals are eaten lying on one side, and washing and the toilet happen the same way.
And one shoulder has to stay against the mattress at all times.
Legs must not be propped up either, since propping them drains them and undoes the point. So everything a person does by leaning forward gets rebuilt around a body that cannot, which is why the beds come with angled tables and bent straws.
What nobody designs away is the ceiling. Two months of the same view and the same few feet of room, where the only thing that moves is whoever opens the door.
Where the numbers come from
The work ran at a research facility in Cologne with 24 volunteers, average age 33, carrying about 150 experiments between them. The project leader was disarming about it. “We are trying to make” things as pleasant as possible for our test participants, he said.
The commitment ran longer than the headline suggests. Two weeks of baseline, then the 60 days flat, then a fortnight of recovery, and the payment came to about 19,000 dollars.
Three groups were compared. One lay still throughout, the other two were spun daily in a short arm centrifuge to press one gravity back through the body, as one 30 minute run or six five minute bursts.
Which was the actual question. Bed rest already had decades of results behind it; nobody knew whether half an hour of manufactured gravity a day could hold it off.
What the spinning failed to hold
On muscle it did something. Calf strength fell 48 percent in the group that only lay there and 31 to 35 percent in the ones being spun, and jumping power fell 33 against 25.
Protection, then, but nothing like prevention.
On fitness it did nothing. Every group lost the same amount of maximal oxygen uptake, and the researchers were blunt about why: being spun asks almost nothing of heart and lungs, since the only muscles working are the calves keeping a volunteer from fainting.
Sleep went the other way. By day 58 sleep efficiency had slipped from about 85 percent to 77 and night time arousals had risen roughly 80 percent, so people who had done nothing but lie down slept worse than when they arrived, the way a change deep inside a system shows up where nobody looked.
The result that has not arrived yet
Bone is the part everyone expects to fail, and on the scan it did not. Density came back unchanged, which sounds like good news and is really a limit of the instrument, since it takes 90 days or more before a scanner sees a difference.
The blood said otherwise. Markers of bone breaking down rose about 37 percent, so the skeleton had already begun handing material back while the scan read normal.
And that gap is the honest finding here. Sixty days is long enough to catch the process starting and too short to price it, which is why the study diary reads like people waiting on an answer that lands after they get up.
Which is the problem a Mars crew has. A transit each way runs six to nine months, longer than anything tested here, so the question is not whether a body gives way but how fast, and a long revision is likelier than a clean answer. The centrifuge trial is one line in it.
For now the result stands. Half an hour of manufactured gravity a day saves part of a calf and none of a lung, and the rest of the bill arrives later.
