The world has been transformed by several pioneering inventions, with some originating from the UK, including the steam engine, the telephone, the first commercial telegraph, and the jet engine. Now, a British automaker is behind the creation of a vehicle that can potentially reach 872 HP without a drop of fuel. No, it is not Rolls-Royce or Bentley, but another legend in the world of racing, and its legacy includes rapid success in Formula 1 racing in the late 1950s. Will this next-gen vehicle help this British legend create another lasting legacy?

Building on a legacy, one win after another

According to the company’s website, it all began in 1948 when Colin and Hazel Chapman founded the legendary British automaker, which continues to stun the world today. Their initial focus was on manufacturing lightweight, high-speed kit vehicles and racing vehicles. According to a YouTube video by National Geographic UK, the company achieved a successful debut in Formula 1 within just six years.

Fast forward five more years, and the automaker ruled the Formula 1 World Championship. While the world of racing and vehicles has significantly evolved since then, this British legend refused to fall behind, building on its legacy and wins. The automaker has continued to manufacture innovative sports cars and has evolved its design language to reflect newer generations.

In fact, one of its latest designs is modern and powerful, and does not use a drop of fuel.

British legend launching 872 HP without a drop of fuel

If you have not guessed it, the British legend that we have been referring to is none other than Lotus Cars. Just like several other automakers, Lotus has gone electric, conforming to pressures to decrease carbon footprints and meet climate targets. The automaker debuted its concept of a pioneering electric sports vehicle, staying true to its original legacy while embracing the modern era.

The next-gen sports vehicle is called Theory 1, which will hopefully be a preview of a production vehicle model soon. Theory 1 would utilise Lotus LEVA (Lightweight Electric Vehicle Architecture) platforms. One cannot help but wonder if they are a little late to the party, however, as the future lineup for F1 will be hydrogen screamers. Nonetheless, as Theory 1 remains an impressive concept.

The specs of Lotus’ Theory 1

According to Lotus’ website, Theory 1 highlights the automaker’s dedication to designing vehicles truly ‘For the Drivers,’ as the concept vehicle will have the following at its core:

  • Progressive technology
  • Material reduction
  • Sustainability

Fans of Lotus can look forward to the concept vehicle’s active aero, forged carbonfibre trim, and a rectangular steering wheel with a screen in the centre. Theory 1 will also have next-gen haptic controls and advanced sensorial audio. What’s more, Lotus claims that the Theory 1 will boast 469 HP in base form and up to 872 HP in dual-motor mode.

Additional features:

  • Soft robotic fabric for responsive seating
  • Soft robotic fabric on the steering wheel that inflates to communicate with driver
  • Maximised comfort
  • Weight reduction
  • Binaural audio technology

According to Motor1.com, the cost for the Theory 1 is expected to start at around £70,000, but costs could vary depending on production. The concept vehicle will reportedly replace the automaker’s electric Emira vehicle, and it has been confirmed that it will be manufactured at Hethel. Customers will have to wait a little longer before seeing the concept become a reality, as production has been scheduled for 2027.
