The 7am to 7pm rule is landing in a new region. While many people in the UK commute using public transportation, the number of drivers on the streets is still large, and some cities are implementing measures to reduce traffic. Although the yellow lines are not something that residents like, they help with the flow of traffic. On the other hand, there are other measures that are even more restrictive and only allow stopping during a certain period of time you are allowed to stop there. Now, this rule is coming to a new town, and it will be permanent.

The 7am to 7pm rule: It is already in place in multiple cities in the UK

The 7am to 7pm was created to reduce congestion, prevent drivers from stopping in areas that are not prohibited, but still harm traffic flow in some areas, and improve air quality in some regions. According to a statement from the Royal Borough of Greenwich, some areas have restrictions on vehicle access during specific time windows, encouraging car drivers to opt for other sustainable modes of travel, such as electric bikes.

Now, this measure is being implemented in a new neighbourhood in London. Other cities, like Oxford, have the Zero Emission Zone (ZEZ), which operates daily from 7am to 7pm. A variation of this rule is also in place in other regions in the capital. Vehicles entering specific zones during the time window will be charged, especially electric or hybrid models.

London will see the changes: Check the affected areas.

Drivers in England may soon face a permanent 7am to 7pm measure following a trial in Greenwich, London. The local council is considering making the rules permanent, which would limit access to certain roads during peak weekday hours. Under the West and East Greenwich Neighbourhood Management Scheme, 13 roads currently have access restrictions during the morning and evening rush hours.

The scheme, which started last November, runs Monday to Friday from 7am to 10am and 3pm to 7pm. The council’s latest update suggests keeping these hours the same while relocating cameras on Royal Hill and Blissett Street. Changes could also see an increase in vehicle exemptions for Blue Badge holders, allowing two vehicles per eligible person instead of one. For older people that don’t commute using other type of transportation, they will have to clear the compulsory test first.

Locals are helping to implement the new traffic measures

Community feedback has played a big role in shaping the 7am to 7pm law in certain areas. Thousands of residents took part over three rounds of consultation—from identifying traffic issues to reviewing trial proposals. During the most recent stage, more than 4,000 people provided input, 273 attended six local events, and just over 50 joined an online session.

In West Greenwich, 54% of monitored areas recorded a drop in nitrogen dioxide (NO2), while 66% of areas in East Greenwich saw reductions, with no locations experiencing an increase. While these results are positive, more people can choose to commute using public transportation once this rule is well established in the city – especially if the 7am to 7pm measure is implemented in their region.

Other changes in the UK: Everybody is adapting

The 7am to 7pm is just one of multiple measures cities in the UK are implementing to reduce the number of cars in the streets and help the environment. While there are still many more to come, this one is encouraging drivers to choose wisely before taking the car and going to a place that is not allowed to be visited during this time window. As an example, some residents are choosing a bike instead of the car in Liverpool, but new rules about cycling are being created
