Workplace barriers in the UK
The experience of the quality of the UK’s workplace may differ significantly from someone else’s. Beyond individual experiences and viewpoints, factors such as location, industry type, and company also impact how someone evaluates the workplace quality. While this experience may be subjective, one unfortunate workplace issue is the workplace barriers in the UK.
A report by the International Accounting Bulletin indicated that people with certain conditions tend to face the following workplace barriers in the UK:
- Lack of accessibility
- Flexible working arrangements resistance
- Discrimination
These workplace barriers make it increasingly difficult for people affected by certain conditions to maintain or return to employment. Thankfully, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) offers extra help to people with 7 conditions.
DWP offers extra help to people with 7 conditions
The DWP has been keeping busy. In one of its recent urgent statements, the department urged all beneficiaries to mark the key dates in November to receive a surprise. Now, DWP has announced that people with seven conditions may be eligible for extra help from the Access to Work scheme. The goal of the scheme is to ensure that people with these conditions are able to maintain or find employment.
According to the Access to Work scheme’s official website, the following conditions will be eligible for additional help from the DWP:
- ADHD or dyslexia
- Developmental conditions, such as autism spectrum disorder
- Illnesses such as diabetes or epilepsy
- Learning disabilities or related conditions, such as Down syndrome
- Mental health conditions, such as depression or anxiety
- Physical disabilities, such as utilising a wheelchair or hearing difficulties
- Temporary conditions, such as a broken leg
Other requirements that must be met besides having at least one of the above conditions include:
- Reside and work (or return to or start) work in either Wales, England, or Scotland
- Be at least age 16
- Receive an income from work (or will begin to receive or will return to paid work within 12 weeks)
- Self-employed people must have a minimum of £6,500 in annual turnover
Requirements to claim the grant’s money
The following help will be offered by Access to Work:
- Mental health support
- Practical workplace support, such as travel costs
- Communication support for job interviews
Access to Work grants are easy to claim, which can be done either online or by post. However, to claim online, you must first create an account. Secondly, additional information will be required to successfully claim your grant.
Online claims
- Must have an email address
- Mobile phone accessibility
- Must have a National Insurance (NI) number
- Must have 2 documents as proof of identity, such as the last 3 months’ payslips and a valid UK passport
Claims by post

Facing workplace barriers daily is no easy feat, and may lead to an economic inactivity crisis. Thanks to schemes such as Access to Work, breaking barriers no longer seems impossible. Outside the workplace, people must also face challenges, especially as temperatures decrease and electricity bills increase. This winter will be particularly challenging for low-income Britons. Thankfully, not all hope is lost, as some Britons may be eligible to claim £1,700, but only if they are customers of the five specified electricity suppliers.
