A vaccine is a fragile thing with a narrow window.
Too warm and it is dead. Too cold and it is also dead, and nobody looking at the vial can tell.
Keeping that window is easy anywhere the wall socket works.
Where it does not work, the usual answer was a panel, a battery and a hope.
The battery is the part that dies first, usually years before anything else, often in a place with no road to it.
So the fix was to stop storing electricity altogether.
Ice holds a temperature that a battery only holds a charge
Cold can be banked, and banked far more densely than most people expect.
Warming a pound of water by one degree takes one unit of heat. Melting a pound of ice takes about 144 of them, and the ice does not get any warmer while it melts.
That second part is the whole trick.
A frozen store sitting against the cabinet wall absorbs heat leaking in from the room at a fixed temperature, not a falling one, so the box does not drift the way a battery powered box drifts as its voltage sags.
The compressor runs whenever the panels are producing, which is the hottest part of the day, and it spends that power freezing the store rather than doing anything clever.
Then the sun goes, and the store pays it back slowly through the night, through cloud, through a week of rain.
No battery, no charge controller, no replacement cycle.
The building this has to work inside
Across sub Saharan Africa more than 70 percent of health facilities lack reliable electricity, and roughly one clinic in four has none at all.
Reliable is doing a lot of work in that sentence. In one assessment of Malawian hospitals, seven of the eleven surveyed reported outages of 8 to 16 hours a day.
Those are the buildings with a grid connection.
Further out the picture changes shape entirely. One health centre in the southern highlands sits 43 miles from Blantyre and is reachable on foot or in a high clearance truck, and nothing else.
A refrigerator there cannot be serviced on a Tuesday.
It has to run for years on nobody visiting, which is a specification, not a wish.
What the programme has actually installed
Malawi put in its first solar direct drive unit in 2015 and scaled up from 2018, funded through Gavi with UNICEF handling delivery alongside the health ministry.
The count now stands near 600 units, all 29 district vaccine stores run on solar, and roughly 60 percent of the national cold chain is solar powered.
Cold chain points across the country have roughly doubled, from about 600 to around 1,200.
The three day figure is not a sales claim either. Prequalification has required a minimum autonomy of three days at full vaccine load since the standard was written, and the first unit cleared it in 2010.
Two cyclones have tested it since. During Cyclone Ana in 2021 the solar units kept running while grid fridges had their stock evacuated.
Cyclone Freddy in March of 2023 damaged 65 health facilities, closed 15, cut off 10 and halved capacity at the rest, and the ministry assessment afterward found no damage to solar equipment.
What the three day number does not cover
Autonomy is measured with the door shut, at a rated ambient temperature, on a full load.
A clinic running a vaccination session opens that door repeatedly in the heat of the afternoon, and every opening spends part of the store.
Ice is also only one of four approaches. Prequalified units store cold as ice, as water, as an ice bank or as a phase change material, and they are not equal in cost or in service life.
The panels are the durable half of this, rated for twenty years or more, the same long promise written on every module leaving a factory, whether it ends up on a clinic or on an ordinary roof.
The cabinet, the gasket and the compressor are not rated that long.
The failure mode moved rather than vanished
What this removes is a fuel delivery and a battery replacement.
What it leaves is a fleet of appliances in hundreds of buildings, each needing a technician who can reach it, a temperature record somebody reads, and a spare part that exists in the country.
Installation alone takes four to six weeks of preparation after a site is declared ready, as the programme account describes.
That is the work that decides whether the number holds in five years, as the equipment specification makes plain.
The solar fridges were the straightforward part.
Keeping 600 of them running is the actual programme.
