Tesla has been at the forefront of electrical vehicle innovation and adoption of the mainstream. While the company plans to continue launching cars, the focus will deviate from the carmaker industry and towards a new project that will be inside buildings and houses. Elon Musk has been working on this concept for a while, building power stations and embracing the hard parts of finding new, renewable sources of energy to transform multiple areas at once – and this is currently happening far from the U.S.
Tesla is present in multiple industries: From driverless cabs to powering houses
While the EV industry has been dominated by Tesla for several years, this is changing in 2025. Instead of only focusing on electrical vehicles, the company is investing heavily in autonomy driving. Driverless cabs are not new to the industry, but still an under-explored area in which it could see profits. The tests were conducted in Austin, Texas, and San Francisco, but only a few cars are available for use.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk is also thinking about the next trend to build a product and become the leader in the industry. Tesla has an extensive resume when it comes to powerful cars with batteries that generate enough power for a Cybetruck to beat a Lamborghini in a drag race. Now, they want to take this technology into homes, to power houses with renewable energy and make electricity bills lower.
A new project in the UK: Time to power houses instead of cars
Tesla is looking to make a new push in the UK — not with cars this time, but with electricity. Elon Musk’s company has applied for a licence that would allow it to supply power directly to households and businesses across the country. The request was submitted at the end of last month, with Andrew Payne, who runs the European energy branch, signing off on the paperwork.
If regulators give the green light, it could be battling with the UK’s big energy providers as early as next year. This isn’t their first step in the energy world. In Texas, the company already runs the electricity area of the company, a service that lets customers cut bills and even make money by sending extra power back to the grid.
But the UK plan comes at a tough time for its car business. Sales in Britain fell almost 60% compared to last year, and in Germany, July numbers dropped by more than half as well. In the meantime, BYD is entering Europe and adding new cars to the line-up in 2026.
Reasons for Musk to bet in other areas: Sales decline worldwide
The sharp decline in sales worldwide has often been linked to the backlash over Elon Musk’s political stances, combined with heavier competition in the EV market, especially from Chinese brands. The company is not landing in the country without preparation. As early as 2023, the company posted a job listing on LinkedIn for a head of operations to lead projects in the region. In the advert, Tesla explained that the move into retail electricity was part of its larger goal of speeding up the shift to renewable energy.
From high-performance cars to “common” power grids
Tesla also stressed that making electricity services easier and more accessible was essential if consumers were to embrace the idea of virtual power plants. The company argued that a simple customer experience could help households contribute to stabilizing the grid and support the long-term aim of running it entirely on renewable sources. Meanwhile, they will still continue to work in the car manufacturing industry, as the brand has recently unveiled its new high-performance vehicle.
