A 12 person crew wore proximity badges through 10 months of Antarctic winter, where the ones who spent the most time near colleagues reported the most conflict and the most suspicion

The assumption behind almost every isolated habitat design is that people need each other.

Common rooms get built large, tables get placed where crews will pass them, and the layout is drawn to make encounters likely rather than avoidable.

Behind it sits a belief so ordinary that nobody states it, which is that contact is support.

Lonely crews do badly. That part is well established, it shows up in polar programs and in submarine crews alike, and nobody disputes it.

The inference drawn from it is that more time near other people is therefore protective.

That step is the one being tested.

In a sealed station nobody can be avoided

The mechanism that breaks the assumption is not psychological. It is architectural.

In ordinary life a difficult colleague is diluted. You see them at work, then you go home, and the rest of your week contains people who have nothing to do with them.

Inside a sealed station that dilution does not exist, because the same faces appear at breakfast, in the corridor, at the instrument rack and at dinner, every day, for months.

A small irritation cannot be walked away from, so it does not fade. It gets rehearsed against the same person, in the same rooms, with no new material arriving to displace it.

Support requires the option of leaving. Remove the option and the same encounter becomes something else.

Proximity stops being a choice.

A plateau station two miles up

The setting is a research station on the high interior plateau of Antarctica, jointly run by two national programs.

It sits around 10,600 feet above sea level, roughly 590 miles from the nearest coast and about 350 miles from the nearest other station.

The last aircraft of the season leaves in February and nothing can reach the place again until spring, so for the winter the crew is beyond evacuation in the literal sense.

Outside temperatures reach around 112 degrees below zero, which means the isolation is not only social. Nobody goes for a walk.

Space agencies treat it as one of the closest available analogues for a long duration crewed mission, which is precisely why it gets studied.

The place is a stand in.

Badges that count encounters instead of asking about them

Twelve crew members wore wearable proximity sensors for the full ten month overwintering period.

The badges log who came close to whom, for how long and how often, which converts a social structure into a record rather than a recollection.

Alongside that the crew filled in repeated psychological assessments at four points across the mission, covering loneliness, conflict, trust, cohesion and how they rated their own work.

The result went the wrong way. Contact increased over time, and the people logging the most of it reported more conflict, more mistrust and worse performance rather than less.

Crew members described others talking about them or watching them, and the badges showed the group splitting into subgroups along language and nationality lines.

Loneliness rose across the mission as well, which is the part everybody expected, and it rose at the same time as the contact did.

Cohesion fell while encounters rose.

Twelve people is twelve people

This is one crew, in one winter, at one station, and the sample is small enough that a single difficult personality could move every number in it.

The design is also observational rather than experimental. Nobody assigned anyone more or less contact, so the direction of the arrow is not established, in the way that a single documented extreme or a stretch with no data produces a pattern only.

It is entirely possible that people already in conflict end up physically closer, arguing in corridors and being drawn into the same rooms by the work itself, rather than closeness generating the friction in the first place.

The researchers put it as a warning about assumptions rather than a finding about crews, which is how the published paper frames it.

Direction remains an open question.

What a habitat designer takes from this

The practical reading is narrow and worth keeping narrow.

If closeness can carry a cost, then private space and the ability to withdraw stop being a luxury in a layout and become part of the psychological equipment, on the same footing as the common room.

It also argues for measuring social quality rather than social quantity, since a badge counting minutes cannot tell a supportive conversation from an argument, and the crews in question were screened, trained and professional.

None of that means people should be kept apart. It means the thing that helps is a particular kind of contact, and the total is a poor proxy for it.

The proximity badges counted every encounter.

They could not count which kind.
