Navigating the modern world in the 21st century is not as easy as one would think. Yes, we are fortunate to have access to some of the finest and most advanced technology to date, with various apps to make our daily lives so much easier. However, the very things that are supposed to assist us may let us down. A class action lawsuit of a popular peer-to-peer payment service is the perfect example of how technology can lead to extra stress instead of preventing it.

The latest update on this class action lawsuit

Money and technology go hand-in-hand, and it is quite devastating when one compromises the other. At present, millions of users are (barely) patiently waiting for their money from a popular payment service’s class action lawsuit settlement.

Cash App users were left compromised after a massive breach of sensitive user data, which occurred between August 23, 2018, and August 20, 2024. Hackers obtained users’ personal and financial information during the breach, which led to transactional fraud and other security problems. The breach inevitably resulted in legal action against the parent company of Cash App, Block, Inc. The company denied all allegations, but agreed to a $15 million settlement to resolve the claims.

When the settlement expects to pay out the money

The payment date of the settlement has been a popular topic of late. The final approval hearing already took place on January 13, 2025, which means the settlement is presently in the appeals phase. While the settlement is still working through that process, it is predicted to only conclude by the end of 2025. This means many people still await their payment, and various factors may result in a payment delay.

Factors that may result in a payment delay

  • High Claims Volume
    • A large number of claims may take longer to review and verify
  • Verification and Additional Criteria
    • Multiple payout divisions may take longer to calculate
  • Appeals Process
    • If many appeals need resolution, payouts could be delayed by months
  • Payment Method
    • Physical checks have longer waiting times than digital payment options
  • Technical load
    • A high load of payouts could trigger third-party processing syncing delays

If you are one of the eligible class members, you hopefully opted for one of the digital payment options, like Zelle, PayPal, or direct deposit. It would at least cut some of the waiting time.

This group of people will be eligible to claim up to $2,500

Naturally, only people deemed as eligible class members were able to claim from the settlement. The following criteria determined eligibility:

  • You filed a claim form by the deadline of November 18, 2024
  • You were a Cash App user between August 23, 2018, and August 20, 2024
  • You were affected by the breach
  • You provided documented proof of losses
    • Receipts
    • Bank statements
    • Records of unauthorized transactions

Class members who submitted supporting documentation had the chance to claim numerous reimbursements. These reimbursements included:

  • Lost time compensation
    • Lost time due to securing data, contacting customer service, and monitoring accounts
    • Claim a rate of $25 per hour for up to three hours
  • Out-of-pocket losses
    • Claim up to $2,500
  • Transaction losses
    • Transaction losses between August 23, 2018, and August 20, 2024
    • Provided proof such as incident notices or police reports
    • Claim a share of the settlement funds

The only advice that can be given for settlements like these is to actively wait, i.e., stay up to date with your status to ensure you haven’t missed an email or notice. You can track your Cash App Settlement payout status by reaching out to the Class Administrator, whose contact details are listed on the settlement’s official website. For more information about this settlement, you can visit Top Class Actions and get informed about how to file a claim.

Disclaimer: You should not submit false or inflated claims under penalty of perjury, as class‑action claim forms historically required declarations signed “under penalty of perjury” to ensure authenticity. Submitting a fraudulent claim not only carries legal exposure—including potential civil and criminal sanctions—but also harms other eligible class members by diluting the available settlement pool.
