Ancient pottery from a Georgia mound city holds the earliest evidence of cacao east of the Mississippi

Nearly 1,000 years ago, people gathered at Etowah — a thriving Mississippian city of earthen mounds and open plazas along a Georgia river — for feasts that left traces in the clay of their pottery. Scientists examining those ancient residues have now found something unexpected: DNA from Theobroma cacao, the tropical plant at the heart of chocolate.

It’s the first clear evidence of cacao consumption this far east, and it immediately raises a question the finding alone can’t answer — how did a plant that can’t survive Georgia’s climate end up in the hands of people living there nearly a millennium ago?

A find hidden inside ancient pottery sherds

The pottery that yielded this discovery came from Etowah’s earliest feasting areas — contexts directly tied to the construction of the site’s first platform mound. These weren’t random household scraps. They were sherds connected to communal gatherings, the kind of large-scale events that marked Etowah’s beginnings as a place of ceremony and social importance.

Researchers studied pottery dating to roughly 800 to 900 years ago, placing the samples in the 11th and 12th centuries. Ancient residue was extracted from the vessels, and whatever DNA had survived inside the material was sequenced. That preserved genetic information was then compared against the known genome of cacao.

The process wasn’t straightforward. Ancient residues are messy — carrying DNA from soil bacteria, surrounding plant material, and other environmental sources that accumulate over centuries. Separating those traces from anything biologically meaningful was a central methodological challenge, one the team had to work through before any identification was possible. The study appeared in PLOS One, a peer-reviewed journal, giving the findings a layer of scientific scrutiny that matters when a claim is this significant.

Why DNA settled a question that chemistry could not

This wasn’t the first time researchers had looked closely at these pottery residues. Earlier chemical analysis had already detected caffeine in the same samples — a result intriguing enough to suggest cacao, but not definitive on its own.

The problem was yaupon holly. Native to the American Southeast, this plant also contains caffeine and shares other chemical markers with cacao, which meant chemical testing alone couldn’t tell the two apart. The ambiguity was real, and it left the question open.

DNA changed that. Genetic material recovered from two Etowah Complicated Stamped pottery sherds matched specifically to Theobroma cacao — the species used to make chocolate — a level of specificity that chemical markers simply can’t provide. Getting there required isolating cacao’s genetic signature from everything else present in the residue. It’s painstaking work, and the fact that identifiable cacao DNA survived at all after nearly a millennium is itself notable. Ancient DNA degrades and fragments over time, which is precisely why the recovered material is described as highly fragmented — present, but not intact.

Cacao in Georgia: a tropical plant far from home

Here’s what makes the finding geographically striking: cacao can’t grow in Georgia. The plant requires a tropical climate, and the American Southeast simply doesn’t provide one. Its presence at Etowah wasn’t accidental or a matter of proximity.

Someone had to acquire it deliberately, from somewhere much farther south, and move it northward through whatever exchange systems existed at the time. Researchers don’t yet know the precise origin of Etowah’s cacao or the route it traveled. That remains an open question.

What the finding does establish is that cacao’s reach extended well beyond what was previously documented. Its presence in the American Southwest — including the large settlement at Chaco Canyon — was already known. Etowah now pushes that boundary significantly eastward, and the timing is worth noting: cacao use at Etowah appears to overlap roughly with cacao use at Chaco Canyon. That parallel suggests these weren’t isolated incidents of long-distance exchange. It points toward broad, overlapping networks operating across much of the continent at roughly the same period.

What Etowah looked like at its peak

To understand what this discovery means, it helps to picture the site itself. Etowah covered about 54 acres along the Etowah River in present-day northwestern Georgia, featuring six large earthen mounds, an open plaza, and a surrounding village — a substantial urban landscape by any measure.

The site reached its greatest regional importance around the 14th century, when it ranked among the most significant centers in the Mississippian world. But the cacao evidence predates that peak by roughly two centuries, placing it in the site’s earliest phase of monumental construction.

That timing matters. The pottery came from feasting contexts tied to building Etowah’s first platform mound — a moment when the community was actively shaping itself into something larger and more ceremonially organized. Feasting wasn’t incidental to that process; it was central, a way of binding people together around shared effort and shared ritual. Cacao, then, wasn’t arriving at a minor outpost. It was reaching a community in the act of becoming something significant.

Rewriting the map of pre-Columbian trade

What this discovery ultimately challenges is a persistent underestimation of how connected ancient North America actually was. The movement of a tropical plant from its growing regions into the interior of the continent — apparently in more than one direction — implies organized, sustained exchange rather than occasional, accidental contact.

Goods, people, and ideas were clearly moving across vast distances centuries before European arrival. Cacao is just one marker of that movement, but it’s a vivid one precisely because it couldn’t grow where it was found.

For researchers, the Etowah evidence calls for a broader framework when thinking about ancient Indigenous trade. The networks were real, they were extensive, and they connected communities that modern assumptions have often treated as isolated. That’s worth sitting with. The people who gathered at Etowah to feast and build their first great mound were participating in something larger than their immediate landscape — a web of exchange that stretched toward tropical regions they may never have seen. What else traveled along those same routes, and what other traces of it are still waiting inside ancient clay, remains an open and genuinely exciting question.
