Europe lives in the 22nd century: First-ever flying car just overtook Tesla

Europe just hit the futuristic mark and is perhaps living in the 22nd century. It has developed its first-ever flying car called the EHang EH216-S, and it is pilotless too! This places the air transport industry on a pedestal as it is redefining daily, personal and public urban air transportation for the global community. This air taxi is just mind-blowing.

European autonomous urban flying mobility pioneered by the EHang EH216-S

EHang is a Chinese brand that has invented the EHang EH216-S, a two-seater flying car made to navigate sophisticated urban environments, and this flying car has no human pilot to control it whatsoever. With its recent flight in Benidorm, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) witnessed the first-ever operation of a pilotless eVTOL aircraft in a European city.

Close to Benidorm, the aircraft flew over a specific corridor with twelve drones, and as part of the performance and demonstration, they had surveillance and freight tasks as part of the packaged project of the U-ELCOME. The same U-ELCOME provides a platform whereby partners from 51 collaborators from Spain, France and Italy can test their UAM technology.

The goal is to certify and integrate Europe’s U-space, which is a first-time development service, and then permit the use of drones in urban areas, reports ZAG Magazine. The utilisation of the U-space permits Spain’s Air Navigation Service Provider to manage this significant operation so that there is a smooth, fair and productive operation that does not cause air traffic.

The reason behind Benidorm as the chosen city in Spain

When we talk of a strong tourism-driven economy, we point at Benidorm, and that is why it is the chosen city. Tourists can have the chance to explore this new development because flying cars are quite intriguing. Additionally, the city itself is not new to drones and flying machines. There has been the use of police drones being tested there and other aerial systems; therefore, it is a balance of dynamic, economic growth and innovative flying transportation.

These flights represent a significant advancement in the integration of unmanned aircraft systems into urban settings, according to Victoria Jing Xiang, COO of EHang for Europe and Latin America. They are excited to be collaborating with Benidorm to develop the future of air travel and to be a part of the U-ELCOME project as they tap into expanding the city’s economy and advancing new technologies.

Self-driving aircraft and flying cars might overtake conventional electric vehicles such as Tesla

Is Tesla in trouble now that Europe has a pilotless flying car? While Tesla, the pioneer of electric vehicles, has tapped into the autonomous market and dominated, the invention of this new EHang EH216-S challenges everything Tesla believes and built. This is because flying cars have introduced something new and fresh that is transforming the dimensions of personal and public air transport, something that Tesla does not have.

What Ehang has achieved is a clear demonstration that pilotless eVTOLs are effective and useful and can be implemented in urban areas without a hassle, ensuring that the way is paved for air taxis and self-driving aircraft to function smoothly. The beauty of it all is that the skies are now becoming as accessible as the roads, which will reduce congestion and shift the paradigm of transportation.

Regulatory and safety issues: Choosing the right path

While we are happy and excited about how Europe is redefining the transport industry, we need to remember the safety regulations that are needed to fully implement this project to full operation. The success of the U-ELCOME initiative emphasises how important it is for government officials, business stakeholders, and regulatory agencies to integrate; nothing goes public without implemented and signed regulations

Vertical Magazine states that EHang’s success in implementing the flying car in Bernorm, Spain, indicates how secure and assured they are about this invention and that bringing this process to reality feels like winning the jackpot. The good thing is that everything aligns with Europe’s regulations, such as the European Union. What they wanted has been effective and that is having a legal framework that makes this project seamless.
