A trip by hot air balloon is typically a quiet, peaceful event.
A traveler can float over vineyards and rolling hills, taking in the view from hundreds of feet above the ground. That expectation quickly changed when a balloon carrying 13 people descended into a narrow patch of grass behind a family home.
The passengers smiled as they climbed out of the basket, greeting their startled neighbors with a simple “Good morning.”
For the passengers, it marked the end of an unusual flight.
For the homeowners, it marked the beginning of a story they never expected to tell.
A hot-air balloon appears behind a family home
Hunter Perrin and his wife Jenna lived in Temecula.
On a Saturday morning, they were at home when a neighbor knocked on the door with some unexpected news.
“I guess you’ll never believe this,” Hunter quoted the neighbor as saying. “They just landed.”
At first, Hunter had absolutely no idea what the man was talking about.
He had been watching TV while Jenna was practicing yoga inside.
He then went outside and saw a hot-air balloon in his backyard. The balloon was carrying 13 people, including the pilot.
It landed in a grassy spot only about 10 feet wide. It did not hit the house, the trees, or the fence.
The narrow landing area left very little room for error during the descent.
“The way it looked, I thought it was like a fairytale,” Jenna would later describe the scene she saw in their backyard.
Witnesses described a bright blue balloon decorated with gold stars and a crescent moon that towered over the house and yard.
Passengers were relieved to be safely back on solid ground
Brianna Avalos was among the passengers who boarded the balloon with her husband to celebrate their tenth anniversary.
Inside the basket, the reactions varied.
There was relief. There was shock.
There was also the realization that they had landed in the yard of someone they had never met before.
Later, Avalos remembered thinking, “My God, we are in somebody’s yard? This is insane!” Only afterward did Avalos explain that the pilot told passengers an emergency landing had become necessary.
Passengers only learned the full reason after the balloon was safely on the ground.
Other reports later claimed the winds had simply stopped blowing, causing the balloon to hang in place and contributing to its fuel problems.
Despite the unusual situation, none of the passengers were hurt, and apparently no property damage occurred.
Both passengers and the balloon company’s owners praised the pilot’s precision in landing the balloon in such a small space.
The safe landing allowed everyone to leave the backyard without further incident.
Why did the hot-air balloon drop in this particular spot?
It all came down to changing flight conditions.
Both passengers and homeowners agreed that the pilot decided an emergency landing was necessary because of low fuel levels.
Changing or disappearing wind conditions also contributed to the decision. In light of those circumstances, the pilot chose to bring the balloon down in a safe location.
That location happened to be a small backyard in Temecula.
After everyone safely left the basket, the pilot flew the balloon back into the air. It landed nearby in the street shortly afterward, so it could be dismantled and retrieved.
The flight ended safely
No one was injured, and no property damage was reported. Landing nearby allowed the balloon to be dismantled and collected without disrupting the family’s backyard longer than necessary.
Both passengers and homeowners continued their day after an emergency landing that ended safely for everyone involved.
