The search for the deepest and darkest black has been ongoing for years now. It is so black that it absorbs nearly all the light. It looks like scientists have broken through what they have been looking for; this discovery is so dark it can make anything disappear. Using cutting-edge nanotechnology, this ultra-black material absorbs more than 99.9% of light, making it one of the darkest materials ever developed.

The regular black color or paint still reflects some light, but this new ultra-black coating works by trapping light within microscopic structures. What this means is that when objects are coated with this color, instead of appearing normal, they will appear void. Let us talk about how this mysterious black of all blacks works and why it is the talk of the science community.

How this ultra-black and dark substance operates: The science underpinning the shadows

This ultra-black substance is called Vantablack. Scientists have been discussing “the blackest black,” or the world’s darkest color, for years. The media took notice of this debate in 2014 after Surrey NanoSystems created Vantablack, a super-black coating. Since then, it has been becoming more well-known; artists and architects have been interested in utilising it as well.

Vantablack stands for Vertically Aligned Nano Tube Array Black, according to Aktar. According to Surrey NanoSystems, it is the blackest black known to science at the moment, absorbing 99.965% of light. This black was first produced by Surrey NanoSystems employing chemical reactions to develop tiny filaments of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) onto the surface of products being coated.

Pigments that absorb the majority of light wavelengths while scattering some back to the eye are combined to create traditional black colors. This new ultra-black substance, however, raises the bar completely. It employs a sophisticated network of nanoscale structures that capture light and keep it from escaping rather than depending on pigments.

The Vantablack’s odd and intriguing applications

One of the top producers of special coatings in the world, Surrey Nanosystems, created Vantablack, an ultra-black color that is already being investigated for some of the most cutting-edge uses conceivable due to its capacity to absorb almost all visible light. For instance, in the art world, artists, painters and sculptors are eager to use the color and use it for their creative artistic illustrations.

BMW even collaborated with Surrey NanoSystems in 2019 to develop the BMW VBX6. The VBx2 coating on this car is a minor variant of the original Vantablack. The car seems nearly two-dimensional due to the coating’s absorption of over 99% of the light, and its 1% emission permits just enough shape. The color is good but intriguing at the same time.

Vantablack is black but there is another black of the blackest

According to Acktar, MIT rocked the scientific community once more in 2019. Five years after the discovery of Vantablack, MIT discovered a black that is ten times darker. With this new black, 99.995 percent of all incoming light is captured. It turns out that the scientists who found the new color were not even attempting to make the blackest black.

Instead, they were trying to build a layer of carbon nanotubes on an aluminium foil sheet to increase its electrical and thermal conductivity. The scientists discovered that their foil had turned an abnormally deep black when the experiment was finished. Following extensive testing, it was determined that these MIT researchers had found the new blackest black.

The reason why the black of the blackest discovery is essential

The discovery of this new black is not about fun and competition only, but it plays a vital role in the scientific world as well. The flattened appearance, ultra-low reflectivity, great heat conduction, shock and vibration resistance, and potential acute hydrophobia are just a few of the many advantages and benefits of objects coated in such deep black colors. Colors are already being used by Hollywood to improve spectacular effects in plays and movies.

Ultra-black coatings are used by both businesses and scientists to manufacture space equipment. Thermally sensitive devices or electronics, such as thermal infrared cameras, are also coated with these materials. These hues will be more and more helpful in improving the contemporary environment as technology advances and deeper blacks are found.
