The increasing number of vehicle registrations is the reason why a North American state will change its standard vehicle license plates sequence for the first time in just about a century. According to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the state’s current format will run out of available combinations sooner than expected, demanding a new format for the plates. It is believed that the rising number of new vehicle registrations may reflect concerns about new federal trade policies. With the deployment of a new plate format, the Government will face a rare update that can cause a certain inconvenience for millions of car owners and state agents.

Say goodbye to the old plates! License plates will change for the first time in 45 years

A recent spike in new car purchases has brought a North American state nearly to chaos with new car plates. After decades of continuous registrations, the combinations available for new cars were almost zero. According to specialists, the possibilities available for new plates should last for some years, but concerns about rising car prices anticipate this deadline for the next year.

As a result, the end of the plates, as known by the car owners in this state, is about to happen. The existing format, composed of one number followed by three letters and three more numbers, will end with this last sequence: 9ZZZ999, ending the combinations started in 1980 with 1AAA000.

This format was used in California for the last 45 years, but after decades of new car registrations, a major change will be made. The new plate format will start in 2026 and should be a mirrored format composed of three numbers, three letters, and a final number. The new format will allow more registrations with a recognisable structure, avoiding confusion with legacy plates. While California is applying changes due to the rising number of new cars, this US state will apply changes to driving licenses.

These changes are a reflection of a singular moment for California state

These changes reflect a singular moment for California. According to DMV, the number of new vehicles increased in the first quarter of 2025. Some analysts said it happened due to insecurities caused by the trade war, caused by the new tariffs imposed under Trump’s administration.

Fearing a sudden increase in the price of vehicles, the number of sales rose during the last months. Besides being a reasonable argument, it may not be the only explanation for this situation.

Who will receive the very last plate with the old system?

Between the speculations about the new plate system, one question remains: Who will receive the plate number 9ZZZ999? According to DMV officials, it has not been settled how the final plate will be distributed.

Some say that the person who receives the 9ZZZ999 plate will be lucky, but the same is expected for the car registered with the first plate in the new system, with number 000AAA1. It is foreseen to happen at some point in 2026, but even the specialists are not able to determine when. Meanwhile, another US state is promoting a massive ban on irregular license plates, causing serious problems for many drivers.

What will happen to the old plates after the changes?

Besides being a major change for car owners from California, there is no need for concern or despair among owners who have a car registered in the old plate format. According to DMV officials, the new sequence will be rolled out seamlessly, and the existing plates will remain valid.

They assure that this measure will help the state to adapt to the rising number of new vehicles. To be fully informed about the format change to new vehicle plates, visit the California Department of Motor Vehicles website.
