$8 million Viki settlement pays users up to $150 over Facebook data sharing claims

The plaintiffs argue that the tool enabled Viki to share user data and video-viewing preferences without the consent of users.

The VPPA forbids video service platforms from sharing data that could identify a user and their video-watching history, and companies must obtain consent before sharing this data as per the law. Viki denied all wrongdoing, but has agreed to an $8 million class action settlement to resolve the allegations made against the service. Thanks to the settlement, one group of users will qualify to claim.

This group of users will qualify for up to $150

Qualifying users, referred to as class members, will each get a share of the $8 million settlement fund. Of course, attorneys’ fees, administrative expenses, and service awards must all be covered with this fund as well. • Cash payments between $30 and $150
• Viki had to agree to stop utilizing the Meta Pixel web tracking tool on any page that includes video content unless the platform obtains consent

• Viki users who requested or obtained video content on Viki.com between the dates of January 12, 2016, and July 30, 2024, while having both a Facebook and a Viki account, and who received a formal notice of the data sharing that occurred during that period
