Jazz, pizza, Niagara Falls, Friends, Adam Sandler, Ralph Lauren, five US presidents, and so much more. New York State might truly have it all, or at least enough to pique anyone’s interest. Beyond its state treasures, New York just approved inflation rebate checks of up to $400, that will be distributed to its citizens this year. However, only certain individuals will receive some extra money. Are you on the list?

This state has approved inflation rebate checks

The state of New York is paying it forward to New Yorkers. Governor Kathy Hochul implemented a plan to distribute inflation relief rebate checks to state taxpayers this coming fall. Governor Hochul’s motive is pure: Putting some money back into citizens’ pockets to cope with the high cost of living. The inflation rebate checks are part of the state’s $254 billion budget plan.

These payments will be a one-time thing, and they were originally meant to be up to $500; unfortunately, a government-endorsed plan lowered the amount. Believe it or not, some were opposed to the inflation rebate checks and advocated a more vigorous state “Rainy Day Fund.”

Anyway, an estimated 8.2 million taxpayers will benefit from the payments, which reportedly will cost New York almost $2 billion, as indicated by the Division of the Budget. According to the governor’s office, the inflation rebate program will be funded by surplus sales tax revenues, which resulted from the impact of inflation on consumer goods. This means New Yorkers who had to pay increased sales taxes can expect some financial relief soon, but only if they are on the list.

You will receive money if you are on the list

“This is targeted relief for middle- and working-class New Yorkers who need a little extra help.” – Budget division spokesperson

Let’s be realistic, when it comes to “free” money, there will always be a catch. In this case, if you are not on the list, you can kiss that money goodbye. Qualifying taxpayers will not have to lift a finger, as they will automatically qualify for an inflation rebate check.

You will qualify for an inflation rebate check if:

  • You were a state of New York taxpayer in 2023
  • You filed your state income tax return (Form IT-201)
  • You have a reported income either within or below the qualifying thresholds
  • You were not a claimed dependent on another taxpayer’s tax return

If you have not filed your income tax returns, tough luck. We advise you to hop to it and follow these tax return guidelines. For those who have checked every point on the list, fantastic! Note that your rebate amount will vary depending on your 2023 tax year income and filing status.

This is when you can expect payments to be distributed

It is easier to determine your budget if you understand how much money you will qualify for. Your 2023 adjusted gross income plays a significant role.

2023 adjusted gross income

  • $75,000 or less
    • Single filers will receive $200
    • Married, separate filers will receive $200
    • The head of household will receive $200
  • $150,000 or less
    • Married joint filers will receive $400
    • A qualified surviving spouse will receive $400
  • Between $75,000 and $150,000
    • Single filers will receive $150
    • Married, separate filers will receive $150
    • The head of household will receive $150
  • Between $150,000 and $300,000
    • Married joint filers will receive $300
    • A qualified surviving spouse will receive $300

According to the New York Department of Taxation and Finance, you can expect your inflation rebate checks to be distributed this coming fall, anywhere from mid-October 2025. Not everyone will receive their payments at the same time, as distributions are not based on zip codes or region.

New York has joined many other states with financial support programs and stimulus checks. Some of these programs include California’s Family Support Economic Pilot Program.
