Insect traps set at 6 sites across a southeast Wyoming wind range caught bees in 95 of every 100 catches and found no pattern near the turbines, while the groups a blade is most likely to strike were barely sampled

Every survey method has an opinion about what counts as an insect.

A trap does not sample the air. It samples whatever that particular trap is good at catching, and nothing else is ever in the data.

Which means the first question about any insect study is not what it found.

It is what it could find.

Get that backward and a careful result about one group becomes a careless claim about all of them.

That gap is the whole story here.

A blue plastic vane is a fake flower

The trap used in this work hangs from a wire and consists of colored plastic vanes above a jar of fluid.

Those vanes are blue or yellow because bees navigate visually toward exactly those wavelengths, looking for petals.

An insect that flies in, hits the vane and drops into the jar has effectively been fooled by a shape and a color.

That works beautifully on bees and poorly on almost everything else. Moths fly at night and are drawn to light rather than color. Beetles walk as much as they fly. Migrating insects pass hundreds of feet overhead and never come down.

So a vane trap in a field is a bee counter with a small amount of accidental bycatch.

It is not an insect counter.

Six patches of shortgrass and a summer

The ground is high plains in the southeast corner of the state, shortgrass and sage, with a working wind facility standing in it.

Field sites were spread from about 2 miles out to roughly 17 miles from the nearest machines, which gives a long gradient to test against.

Across those sites the crew hung 83 vane traps and ran 13 sessions of active netting by hand.

Netting matters because it is the check on the trap. A person with a net catches what is actually visiting flowers rather than what a piece of blue plastic attracts.

The sampling ran from May into July, which covers the season when bees on this prairie are out and flowers are open.

One summer, one facility, one region, and no repeat year.

Every one of those limits is normal for field work on this budget, and every one of them narrows what the numbers afterward are allowed to mean.

What came out of the jars

The total catch was 1,614 insects, and 95 percent of those were bees.

Bee numbers came out essentially flat across the whole gradient. A trap two miles from a turbine caught about what a trap seventeen miles out caught.

The diversity measure behaved the same way, with the range of bee groups showing no relationship to distance from the machines either.

The work sits inside a wider review published in an open access journal in October of 2024, by two invertebrate researchers at the state university’s natural diversity database.

Two federal agencies paid for it, and the utility operating the site signed off on access.

That combination is worth noting, because the operator is an interested party and not merely a landowner.

The null result and what it covers

A flat line is a real finding and it has a narrow scope.

It says that bees foraging at flower height on this prairie do not appear to be thinned out or concentrated by nearby turbines, over one season, at these distances.

It says nothing at all about the insects the same review flags as most exposed, which are moths, butterflies, beetles, flies and true bugs, largely because they migrate at rotor height and are sensitive to heat.

Those are precisely the groups a vane trap on a post will never see, in the way that a survey under panels or a grazed solar site answers only the question it asked.

The authors say as much and propose reading the blades instead, testing residue for traces of what struck them, which would put a number on the actual collisions.

Why nobody has counted the dead

Birds and bats get carcass surveys under turbines because a dead bird is findable and a regulator asks for the number.

An insect leaves nothing. It is smaller than the grass, it is eaten within minutes by ants and beetles, and there is no permit condition anywhere requiring a single person to go and look for it.

So the largest group of animals interacting with these machines is the one with the least data, and the gap is a monitoring choice rather than a scientific mystery.

Genetic testing of blade residue would close it cheaply, since the evidence is already up there dried onto the leading edges, as the university’s own account of the work suggests.

The insect traps answered the question they were built for.

It was the wrong one.
