This country is credited with the invention of several common objects, including paper, paper money, and the compass. It is also home to the manufacturer of a not-so-common car, which has been hitting the UK in a wave of demand. Now, it has opened 100 dealerships, making its mark in the industry. And no, the country is not Germany, nor is it Japan. Has the manufacturer reached its peak in the UK, or is it merely just the beginning of something even bigger? Find out today.
Increasing in popularity and in demand
The entire world has been focusing on decreasing carbon footprints and transitioning to more sustainable solutions in the energy and transport industries. A highly favourable alternative to internal combustion engine vehicles is electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). In the UK, these alternative modes of transport have seen an increase in popularity and demand.
According to media outlets, Tusker and Pod Point, the following factors have significantly contributed to the increase in popularity and demand for EVs and HEVs in the UK:
- Government policy
- The UK has set a target to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030
- Cost-effectiveness
- Incentives are making EVs a more accessible and cost-effective choice for consumers
- Increased availability
- A wider range of EVs and HEVs is becoming available to consumers
The increased availability can be widely attributed to a particular country’s manufacturer, which has opened its 100th dealership in the UK.
The manufacturer that has opened 100 dealerships in the UK
The manufacturer first opened in April 2023 and has achieved this triumph in record time. Since its establishment, its brand sales have increased by 41.6% per annum. The manufacturer is none other than China’s BYD, which is short for Build Your Dreams. The manufacturer started small by making mobile phone batteries, and dared to dream big and eventually became the biggest EV brand on the planet.
Germany beats the UK with this luxury SUV, but BYD remains the victor. According to a report by The Sun, BYD achieved £80 billion in revenue last year after selling millions of cars and buses. BYD attributes its success to the UK as a key market, indicating that its brand awareness grew from 1% at the beginning of 2024 to 31% by the end of 2024.
The EV manufacturer is dreaming even bigger. According to Bono Ge, BYD’s UK country manager, the goal is to increase the total number of dealerships from 62 to 120 by the end of 2025, and to achieve between 150 and 170 dealerships in the longer term.
Is it the beginning of something even bigger?
BYD beat Tesla concerning global EV sales in 2024, and plans on going bigger. BYD electric buses are already in operation across cities in the UK; however, the manufacturer plans on significantly expanding into public transport thanks to a strong domestic demand and an increase in exports.
The demand and export increase follows the news of BYD’s low-cost, pint-sized hatchback called the Dolphin Surf, which will be released later in 2025. BYD hopes that the new release will compete with Dacia and Fiat, as it will be the most cost-effective to buy brand-new. The EVs launched in the UK will feature upgraded safety tech and will cost less than £20,000, as per Autocar.
The prospective release will contribute to BYD establishing itself as a major player in the global car industry, and perhaps soon the biggest car manufacturer in the world. For loyal consumers of the brand, before the Dolphin Surf is released, you can also look forward to the release of the Sealion 7, which will be the UK range’s seventh model and the sixth EV for BYD. In other news, China and the UK have teamed up to declare war on Tesla with a ‘secret’ car.
