This state is home to the happiest place on earth, Walt Disney World. Not only does the “Sunshine State” have more than 800 miles of beaches, but some lucky citizens in this state might also qualify for a whopping $5,000. However, before you rush to claim your money, it is important to note that only qualifying citizens were allowed to claim from this data breach settlement.

The data breach settlement that made life in the Sunshine State a little brighter

It’s never good news when the words ‘data breach’ are used together in a sentence. This was especially the case on May 16, 2024, when the Sunshine State’s financial institution FloridaCentral Credit Union, with more than 200,000 members, became the victim of hackers after a data breach.

A class action lawsuit followed suit, and plaintiffs claimed that FloridaCentral Credit Union was unsuccessful in preventing the 2024 data breach where hackers obtained information after striking the company’s email system, and thus ultimately failed to protect its members’ personal information. The alleged personal information breach included members’ bank account information and their Social Security numbers.

To resolve the data breach class action lawsuit, FloridaCentral Credit Union agreed to a settlement but did not admit any wrongdoing. While the settlement amount remained undisclosed, qualifying people were able to claim up to $5,000, as well as other benefits.

Only these people qualify to claim $5,000 from the settlement

  • Bank statements
  • Credit reports
  • Receipts
  • Police reports
