On a mudflat in West Africa a small rust colored bird drives its bill into wet sand and comes up empty.

The shellfish are down there, about an inch and a half under the surface, which is where they have always sat.

For this particular bird that is out of range.

It came off the Arctic tundra with a bill shorter than its parents grew, so it eats seagrass roots instead.

The reason sits thousands of miles north, and it has to do with when the snow goes.

The tundra runs early

Red knots of this population breed on the Taimyr Peninsula in Siberia, between 76 and 78 degrees north. Satellite records of that ground run back more than thirty years. Across them the date the snow clears has moved forward by roughly half a day annually, which compounds into something close to two weeks.

Insects follow the thaw. Crane flies and midges emerge once the ground opens, their abundance spikes for a short window, and then it falls away. In a cold year that spike lands while the chicks are at their hungriest, and in an early year it has already come and gone.

The chicks cannot adjust. Their hatch date was fixed by parents who committed to the journey from another continent, weeks before anyone could know what the tundra would be doing on arrival.

A chick that misses the peak still fledges. It just fledges smaller, and the bill is one of the parts that comes out small.

An inch and a half of sand

That would not matter much if the bird stayed on the tundra, but it does not. The wintering ground is Banc d’Arguin on the coast of Mauritania, a shallow bank of tidal flats where the food is buried bivalves. Buried is the operative word.

They sit deep enough that getting one is a question of reach, not skill. Birds with shorter bills cannot make the distance, and they switch to seagrass rhizomes lying at the surface.

Rhizomes are poorer food by a wide margin. A bird can fill itself and still lose condition.

Banc d’Arguin is one of the largest intertidal flats anywhere, and it carries one of the biggest concentrations of wintering shorebirds on the planet. On ground that crowded, an inch of reach is the difference between a good season and a thin one.

What the numbers show

The finding rests on three separate piles of data, which is why it has held up. Snowmelt dates for the breeding grounds came from satellites and cover thirty three years.

Body measurements came from 1,990 juveniles caught on migration at Gdansk Bay in Poland, where this population stops on its way south. Survival came from 2,381 color ringed birds followed on the Mauritanian flats across eleven seasons.

Adult body size fell by about 0.020 standard deviations a year. Bill length fell too, but only about half as fast. Among the juveniles, the individuals with the shortest bills were the least likely to be seen again the following year, which is as close to a verdict as ringing data gets.

Why the bill shrank slower than the bird

That gap between the two rates is the interesting part. If the whole animal were simply scaling down, the bill would shrink at the same pace as everything else. It did not.

Relative to their bodies the survivors are ending up proportionally longer billed than straight shrinkage would predict, which is what it looks like when the short billed individuals keep failing to return. The tundra makes them small and the mudflat then sorts them.

Timing failures like this show up wherever an animal reads one cue to prepare for a resource that runs on another, from a fox settling into a solar field to elephants routing around a hillside of coffee. The full account of this one was published a decade ago and has not been overturned.

It has also been widely misread.

What this is not

The red knot on the beaches of the eastern United States is a different bird. It is a separate subspecies flying a different route, and its trouble is horseshoe crab eggs in Delaware Bay rather than insect timing in Siberia. Welding the two together produces sentences that sound authoritative and describe nothing real.

The second caution concerns the Arctic itself. Spring there is not advancing uniformly, and one long running record found little directional change across twenty five years of plant and insect timing, which makes this a local mechanism rather than a continental rule.

None of that weakens the ringing data. It means the story is one population, one peninsula and one bank of tidal flats, measured carefully across three decades.

Which is more than enough to explain a bird standing in wet sand with nothing on its bill.
