The state of Ohio wants to enhance their security standards by implementing significant driver’s license processes. The federal REAL ID Act, which establishes new requirements for state-issued identification cards, includes these changes. Therefore, if you reside in Ohio and want to renew your license you will need to provide additional documentation to receive a compliant license.

The REAL ID Act was put in place in 2005 when they saw the need to set security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. The aim is to ensure the documents are secure and less prone to any fraudulent activities. For some federal uses, such as boarding commercial aircraft and entering government facilities, REAL ID-compliant licenses or other recognised forms of identification, including a valid passport, will be the only ones allowed as of May 7, 2025.

Reps. Latyna Humphrey (D-Columbus) and Darnell Brewer (D-Cleveland) proposed House Bill 29, which removes the following situations in which drivers will be suspended: as punishments for specific drug offences, tardiness to school, or past-due court fees, among others.

The new documentation needs to obtain this license: Getting ready for your BMV visit

Specific identity documents should be provided for one to obtain a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license in the state of Ohio. To verify your identity, the following are required as requested by the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV): Proof of Identity and Legal Presence, Proof of Social Security Number, Proof of Ohio Residency, and Proof of Name Change (if applicable) according to reports.

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) has also provided the list on the website with detailed information to help applicants with what they need when applying or in preparation for their visit. Before leaving to apply, ensure that you re-visit the list to avoid disappointment and realise that you might have forgotten essential documentation to renew your driver’s license.

Why getting a REAL ID-compliant license is important

Obtaining a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license is not a must; however, it is expected for one to have it if he or she resides in Ohio and plans to engage in activities that require federal identification. However, having said that, after May 7, 2025, if you do have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, you will be restricted from participating in the following: domestic air travel and access to federal facilities.

How to get a License that is REAL ID compliant

Certain steps or procedures need to be followed to obtain the license to avoid complications whenever you need to participate in activities or go to places that are strictly REAL ID-compliant only. Consider engaging in the following steps:

  • Collecting the necessary documentation: Ensure that you have gathered the required documents, such as your identity, Social Security number, Ohio residency and anything that is legally connected to you. Ensure they are original and certified.
  • Go through the Ohio BMV’s list: On their website, the Ohio BMV has provided the correct and required information that can help guide and prepare you in case you are not 100% sure. Going through the list will help you check if you have everything needed.
  • By visiting your local BMV branch is the next procedure because this is where you will hand in the documents, get a photograph of yourself captured and fill out important forms for verification.
  • According to reports, driver’s licenses and identification cards are no longer issued over the counter in Ohio because the manufacturing of these documents has been centralised. Your new licence will be mailed to you within 10 business days of your application being approved, and you will also receive a temporary identification document.

This step that Ohio has taken is good because it enhances security. If residents can understand the reason behind this initiative, they can take action effectively and ensure they are compliant with the procedures required. Fortunately, to help applicants navigate these changes with ease, the Ohio BMV offers tools and advice.
