Drivers in New York need to prepare for changes in their licenses in 2025. The Department of Motor Vehicles is reminding New Yorkers that they are required to upgrade their license or identification cards to REAL IDs before the deadline, which is not optional. If you have not yet moved to a REAL ID or enhanced ID, you can find information on how to do so and the deadline date below.
New Yorkers have to upgrade their ID cards and it’s not optional
The deadline for New York residents to apply for their REAL ID or enhanced ID is less than six months away. This date was extended two years ago from May 3, 2023, and the confirmed final date is now May 7, 2025. Residents of the state don’t have a choice whether they want to move to the new form of ID or driver’s license, and there are repercussions if they don’t.
The NY DMV says don’t wait until the last minute
Although five months seems like a long time, it’s best not to wait until the last minute to apply for the new form of driver’s license. No doubt, other people will have also left it until late and the system may get jammed up trying to handle the influx of applications.
With the deadline of May 7 fast approaching, the New York State DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) is strongly encouraging people to get their REAL IDs now. This upgraded form of identification will be required to fly domestically and to enter federal buildings or military bases.
In other news affecting drivers in the U.S., car owners in several U.S. states are likely to pay more for car insurance as a result of new laws that have raised the floor on required minimum coverages.
Why do all Americans have to upgrade to REAL IDs or enhanced IDs?
The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005. It followed the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that Federal Government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver’s licenses.”
The Act sets minimum security standards for the issuing and production of driver’s licenses. According to the Department of Homeland Security, it also prohibits certain federal agencies from accepting driver’s licenses and identification cards from states for certain purposes that do not meet the Act’s minimum standards.
Requirements to apply for the new ID cards
To upgrade to the new enhanced ID or driver’s license, the following information will need to be supplied to the DMV:
- Proof of your Social Security status
- Two documents that provide proof of New York State residency (such as a New York State driver’s license, permit, or non-driver ID, utility bill, U.S. high school photo ID and report card, bank statement, or U.S. pay stub)
- Proof of your full, legal name using a valid U.S. passport, U.S. government-issued birth certificate, or Permanent Resident Card I-551
There is a fee involved for upgrading to the new form of proof of identity. People who require an enhanced ID will need to pay an extra $30 on top of the regular fee.
Enhanced IDs issued by the state will be allowed in place of REAL IDs. There are different features on the REAL ID driver’s license and the enhanced ID card, so you will need to choose which is right for your needs.
U.S. citizens should note that a passport can be used for travel in place of a REAL ID, and the New York State enhanced ID is acceptable to cross Canada and Mexico’s borders.
If you haven’t upgraded your driver’s license or ID yet, you can go through the process and find out about all the requirements here on the New York Department of Motor Vehicles official website. Make sure to only rely on information from trusted sources and remember to start the process long before the deadline of May 7.
In more news that affects New Yorkers, Governor Kathy Hochul has a plan to distribute funds to citizens of the state via an Inflation Refund. The program would see $3 million in total paid out to around 8.6 million state residents.
