For weeks, a stretch of Pensacola Beach had served as a nursery in plain sight. Black Skimmers and Least Terns were raising their young directly on the sand, relying on little more than camouflage and the relative quiet of their nesting grounds.

Then Tropical Storm Bertha arrived.

The storm did not have to become a major hurricane to pose a serious threat to birds nesting only inches above sea level. Water reached active nesting areas, disrupting colonies during one of the most vulnerable stages of their breeding season.

The episode illustrates a difficult reality for Florida’s coastal birds: storms are part of the environment they evolved with, but the amount of undisturbed habitat available for recovery is increasingly limited.

A fragile home built directly on the beach

Black Skimmers and Least Terns spend their breeding season along Florida’s Gulf Coast, where open stretches of sand provide places to establish colonies and raise chicks.

Unlike species that place nests in trees or vegetation, these birds lay their eggs directly on the beach. Their nests are little more than shallow depressions in the sand, commonly known as scrapes.

That minimalist strategy has advantages. Speckled eggs can be remarkably difficult to distinguish from the surrounding sand, helping conceal them from predators.

But camouflage cannot stop rising water.

A nest sitting almost level with the beach has virtually no physical protection when waves and storm surge reach farther inland. Eggs and young chicks are consequently vulnerable when severe weather coincides with the breeding season.

The timing makes that possibility difficult to avoid. Florida’s hurricane season begins while many coastal birds are still nesting and raising their young.

What Tropical Storm Bertha did to Pensacola Beach

The consequences of that overlap became visible after Bertha.

Audubon Florida, whose Pensacola Beach seabird monitor documented the storm’s effects, reported that seawater reached beyond the usual shoreline and affected areas occupied by nesting birds.

For colonies established directly on the beach, the advancing water left few places of refuge. Nesting areas were inundated, eggs were displaced or covered by sand, and chicks that had not yet developed the ability to fly were particularly exposed.

Surviving the initial flooding did not necessarily end the danger. A disrupted colony can leave young birds away from the adults and the relative security of the nesting area, forcing them to navigate an altered beach while still dependent on their parents.

What happens next depends heavily on timing.

If enough of the breeding season remains, adults may make another nesting attempt. But starting again requires time and energy, and a second attempt is no guarantee of success.

A storm therefore does more than cause damage during the hours in which it crosses the coast. It can consume a significant part of the limited window birds have to produce and raise a new generation.

Already on the edge: why recovery matters

Tropical storms are not new to Florida’s coastal ecosystem.

In fact, storms can reshape beaches in ways that eventually create the open sandy habitat some shorebirds need. The ecological relationship is therefore more complicated than simply treating every storm as an unnatural disturbance.

The difficulty comes from what happens around the storm.

Coastal development has reduced the amount of quiet, undisturbed beach available in many areas. Human activity can add another layer of pressure, particularly when people, pets, vehicles, or other disturbances enter areas being used for nesting.

That means the condition of the beach after a storm matters enormously.

A colony attempting to recover or establish a new nesting site needs enough suitable habitat — and enough time without additional disturbance — to try again.

The storm may be unavoidable. What happens to the birds afterward is not entirely beyond human influence.

Racing back to the beach: Audubon’s post-storm response

Once conditions allow people to return safely, Audubon Florida says its coastal staff and volunteers assess affected nesting areas and determine what protection the birds need next.

That work can include restoring protective postings damaged during the storm, maintaining space around recovering colonies, and helping visitors understand why apparently empty stretches of sand may still be important habitat.

Those measures become particularly significant after a nesting area has been disrupted.

Giving birds sufficient space cannot restore eggs or chicks lost during a storm, but it can improve the conditions available to adults that remain in the area or attempt to nest again.

Audubon’s work also continues beyond the immediate assessment. Monitoring, public education, and cooperation with local communities can help protect nesting areas through the remainder of the breeding season.

What to watch as the season continues

For colonies affected while the breeding season is still underway, the weeks after the storm can be decisive.

Some adults may attempt to nest again. Others may move elsewhere. Success depends not only on the birds themselves but also on whether suitable habitat remains available and relatively undisturbed.

That makes the period between storms important.

Florida’s Gulf Coast will continue to experience tropical weather, and hurricane season will continue to overlap with the breeding season of coastal birds. Neither of those realities can simply be removed from the equation.

But beaches can be managed in ways that give nesting birds more room to recover.

Protecting active nesting areas, respecting posted boundaries, keeping dogs under control around colonies, and minimizing unnecessary disturbance all increase the amount of usable space available to birds when they need it most.

Bertha’s passage through Pensacola Beach is therefore not only a story about what a storm can destroy.

It is also a reminder that the condition in which birds face the next storm — and the amount of habitat available when they begin rebuilding afterward — can make an enormous difference.
