We were told the gut was our second brain — Now doctors say the body may hide a third control center

Third control center revealed by science

A third control center exists within us that plays a vital role in our body’s ability to communicate with our brains.

For generations, we thought that our brains were the be-all and end-all of our internal communication system. We now know that our gut plays an integral part in our brain-body connection. But new studies have shown that we have a third “brain” that controls certain aspects of our bodies.

How will this revelation in our understanding of self affect the future of human science?

How our bodies have adapted to the times and continued to evolve

Science has taught us that human evolution continued well into our modern civilization.

A growing number of people in today’s world are born with an extra artery in their arms. Roughly 100 years ago, only about 10% of people were born this way; that number has shot up to around 30% in the late 20th century.

Most animals on this planet are, in fact, lactose intolerant, and once upon a time, we were too.

But as we began large-scale livestock farming, a genetic mutation allowed our bodies to handle milk. We also have seen many people born with a missing wisdom tooth, as our jaws get smaller due to the fact that we now eat softer foods that require less chewing.

Human evolution: our history of life explained by science

We have evolved in so many different ways over our history, and science has proven this to be true.

Certain groups of isolated people have evolved larger-than-normal spleens, allowing them to stay underwater for extended periods of time as their bigger spleens act like “biological scuba tanks”.

That would have come in handy for one man who spent 93 days living under the ocean.

And another study has taken things a step further to reveal that we have a third “information processing center” within our bodies. Science has shown us that our brains are, in fact, shrinking by about 10% over the past 20,000 years.

Even something as common as blue eyes is actually a genetic mutation that can be traced back to one single ancestor.

Blue skin has also been reported in some people who isolate themselves from the rest of society. A recent study, “Recent Research in Gut Microbiota–Gut–Brain Axis,” published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, has revealed another central command center within our bodies.

Study finds a magical third central control center within our bodies

The recent study found that we have an undiscovered third “brain” that plays an integral part in our body’s communication network.

The third brain that the study found is a tiny set of individual cells made up of molecules and chemical signals. Think of it as a tiny microscopic computer that processes our bodies’ information and makes significant decisions on a molecular level.

This astonishing discovery has shifted our understanding of ourselves

The third brain was found when scientists were studying the internal signaling system within our cells.

The paper focuses on the molecular scale inside our individual cells and how they communicate with the rest of our body’s central nervous system. For decades, we thought that the brain was the main central command when it came to our bodies.

We now understand that we have three “control systems” within our bodies. The brain is the first, our central nervous system acts as the second, and this new molecular communication pathway serves as the third.

Our bodies are amazing and require extensive studies to fully understand how our bodies and brains work.

We now know that our brains are not the only defining factor in how we age and how our body communicates with our brain in astonishing ways never understood, until now.
