The holidays may feel like ages ago, but the snow-filled January may evoke some nostalgic feelings for those who experienced a white Christmas. However, others may not share the sentiment when it comes to snowfalls, as some U.S. states are becoming strict regarding road safety. $850 fines during snowfalls are now inevitable for New Yorkers, among other things. Drivers are thus being urged to check their cars for one important detail; otherwise, they may have to pay the price – literally.
U.S. states are upping their game to boost road safety
While we enjoy the wonderment of pristine, snow-covered landscapes, U.S. traffic officials are stuck with headaches that come along with the increased risk of crashes due to snowfall. As a result, several U.S. states are upping their game to boost road safety. Now, several drivers must be aware of and adhere to stricter traffic laws in January, which historically has enjoyed the most snowfall of all winter months.
According to a report by Elovate, some of the factors that may increase the risk of a crash during snowfall include:
- Slippery roads and nearly invisible black ice
- Reduced traction and stopping times
- Increased risk of sliding
- Increased traffic congestion
- Decreased long-distance visibility
If your vehicle is not properly equipped for harsh winter weather conditions, you only increase your risk of a crash. Another way to shoot yourself in the foot is not being familiar with the various winter traffic laws of the various U.S. states. By understanding what is allowed in some states and what is not, you not only ensure the safety of yourself and that of others, but you will also spare yourself a fine or two.
New Yorkers face $850 fines during snowfalls
Some states have stricter winter traffic laws than others. For example, Chicago has made parking in allocated areas prohibited during the winter. Anyone who breaks that law could potentially face a number of fines. Elovate further indicated that the drivers can also expect some of the following stricter traffic measures:
- Changes in traffic speed
- Mandated traction equipment, such as chains and winter tires
- Prohibition of the use of certain colored lights
For New Yorkers, or any driver who will be traveling in the state of New York, $850 fines during snowfalls, among other things, are now inevitable when they miss one important detail on their cars. Drivers are thus being urged to be more cautious when it comes to this one important detail, or they may end up breaking a New York Vehicle and Traffic Law.
Drivers urged to check one important detail on cars
You must ensure that your car’s windshields and windows are cleared of snow. If not, you could be fined for reckless driving due to decreased visibility. According to New York Vehicle and Traffic Law section 1212, driving around with snow-covered windows or windshields can be seen as something that
“…unreasonably endangers users of the public highway or any parking lot.”
Failure to comply with this law will enable traffic officers to issue you a fine, as this is seen as a misdemeanor offense. The following penalties can be expected:
- Between $100 and $300, and up to 30 days in jail for first-time offenders
- A maximum of $1,125 for repeat offenses, five license points, and jailtime
