A recent announcement by BMW caused commotion among the enthusiasts of electric vehicles (EVs). After controversial opinions about the BMW iX since its first version, in 2022, the company may have found a way to turn the tables. Besides its similar design and the possibility to customize its interior, the 2026 version of this vehicle has a top-secret project in its interior. But could it be enough to calm the critics and raise the popularity of the BMW iX among customers? For some specialists, it definitely is, and we will show you why.
BMW reveals its secret project for 2026
The high-end electric SUVs have recently impacted the automotive industry. With automakers aiming to conquer their space among this luxury market, BMW seems to be left behind after the release of its BMW iX in 2022. Criticised by its design and engine, the model was pointed out as one of the last favorites of car enthusiasts.
After some new features and changes to its exterior and the possibility to customize its interior, it is time to promote some changes to its engine, and BMW may be about to release its ultimate version.
The 2026 BMW iX model, recently unveiled, has a lot of changes, but the most commented is in its engine. Unlike its previous versions, the 2026 model has three purchase options: xDrive45, xDrive60, and M70. The price of this series ranges from USD$ 76,325 for the xDrive45 to USD$ 112,675 for the top-of-the-line M70. About its engine, the new xDriver45 pumps up to 402 horsepower, while xDriver60 pumps 536 horsepower, and the M70 achieves 650 horsepower. Each version is equipped with two motors driving all four wheels.
A remarkable performance on high speed
Besides having improvements for its motor, these models should not have the new engine with boosted performance announced by BMW. Indeed, the new BMW iX is slightly similar to the previous one. A remarkable change appears when it rides at high speed. According to specialists, the iX has the necessary chassis to handle the acceleration. Although there is some squirm when you press the right pedal, the wheel does not squirm, and there are no seasick body motions during the acceleration to high speed.
Furthermore, the combination of the chassis, engine, and hardware of the iX makes this BMW a smooth and quiet car, providing a comfortable ride even on bad paved roads.
The interior remains almost the same: highly customizable
After changes to the exterior and to the engine, the interior of the BMW iX remains almost the same as its previous version. According to specialists, the cabin had only minor changes. The biggest one is the new M Muntifunctional seat with additional adjustments. This new feature is standard on the M70, but for the xDriver45 and xDriver60, it is part of the M Sport package, and is optional.
Among the many customization options, textures are a plus. Faux leather and microfiber seats are standard for all the models, but if you are a fan of real leather, be prepared to pay for it. Also, the interior of the BMW iX is equipped with a fully heated system.
A new era for the BMW iX: it may change some opinions
Another feature of the interior of the 2026 BMW iX is its digital display. Merging infotainment and instrumentation on a single curved screen, it runs the BMW Operating System 8.5. Besides not being the latest version, it is enough for video streaming and for gaming via the AirConsole platform.
In general, the new version of the BMW EV SUV must figure among the less criticized models, but lacks technology. However, BMW iX still has room for improvement. We do know that BMW is capable of developing innovative engines like never before, so why not use it?
