Drivers in California may be subjected to a new speeding fine this year. Driving in the United States often comes with a vast array of dangers and careless drivers that place everyone on the roads in peril. California has recently been rated in the top ten most congested states in the US regarding traffic. Caltrans workers often express significant concerns over safety on California’s roads, which has led the state to implement a new system to alleviate safety concerns for Caltrans workers. So be sure to leave slightly earlier for work; if not, you may be in for a shock from the state of California officials.
Speeding on California’s roads will now cost significantly more
Other than the obvious danger that speeding presents to anyone on the roads, a new penalty system may be needed to force drivers in California to rethink their driving habits. Los Angeles has unwittingly become one of the most congested cities on the planet, with long lines of traffic jams and the iconic smog blanketing the city on a daily basis.
Caltrans workers have been expressing their concerns over the regular speeding they see in person on California roads. The state of California experiences nearly 1,500 car crashes every single day, leading to some of the worst fatality rates in the United States. Now, state officials have passed a new law that has come into effect on January 1, 2026.
California drivers now need to pay extra attention to their speed
California has implemented the new Assembly Bill 289, which states that drivers who exceed certain speed limits in the state will be subjected to new fines. The state has installed a multitude of speed cameras that are keeping a close eye on California drivers. The new law came into effect on the first day of the year following several grace periods.
Be sure to allow for extra travel time to avoid the new fines by the state of California
The new bill states that drivers exceeding speed limits by 11 mph or more will be sent a $50 fine. For those Fast and Furious fanatics who have a need for speed, driving 16 to 25 mph above the posted limit will result in an even larger fine of $100, with things only getting more expensive from their onwards.
Drivers going 26 mph above the speed limit will be forced to pay a $200 fine. The bill also states that any drivers going warp speed, which is to say exceeding the limit by 100 mph or more, will face the full might of the long arm of the law and be sent a $500 fine by the state.
While some US states have made significant changes to the driver’s license system, California is aiming to address the thousands of crashes on its roads as a result of excessive speeding.
“We want to take immediate action against dangerous drivers before their carelessness leads to a deadly crash. We’re being proactive and together with our CHP partners, we’re ready to put the brakes on this reckless behavior.” – Steve Gordon, director of the DMV
California is following the example of several other US states
Caltrans has urged drivers in California to be certain they do not exceed the indicated speed limits on the state’s roads or face the new penalties as part of the new bill. On top of the warnings over the new speed limit system, Caltrans has also urged drivers in California to prepare for the annual freezing temperatures that make driving even more dangerous. The new bill was authored by Democratic Assemblyman Matt Haney, and will provide some much-needed safety guarantees for the thousands of Caltrans workers and the average drivers on California’s roads.
