Crews drove 95 steel tubes of up to 1,985 tons into the North Sea and the record went to neither the tubes nor the crane, while the monopile gripper that earned it gets unbolted and shipped away

A working deck the size of a city block, out in the southern North Sea.

A steel tube 275 feet long hangs off a crane, turning slowly in the air.

It weighs close to 1,985 short tons and has to finish upright on a marked spot, then stay there while a hammer drives it down.

The crane does none of that.

That job belongs to a steel collar.

The collar was meant to come off afterward.

Why a crane on its own cannot set a pile this size

A crane lifts and lowers. What it cannot do is hold a tube the length of a city tower block plumb against wind, current and the movement of a vessel.

So the pile leaves the deck horizontally, is raised upright by a separate frame, then passes into a ring of hydraulic pads that closes around it.

That ring is the gripper, and its job is tolerance. It keeps the pile within a fraction of a degree of vertical while thousands of hammer blows go into the top of it.

The reason that fraction matters is leverage. A foundation slightly out of plumb becomes a tower noticeably out of plumb, and the error grows with every foot of height added above it.

Once the pile is driven, nothing can be adjusted. Whatever angle the gripper allowed is the angle the turbine keeps for 30 years.

The crane supplies the lift. The gripper supplies the accuracy.

What was actually built for this particular ship

Three pieces of equipment were commissioned for the vessel, and none of them is a crane.

A monopile gripper, adapted from an existing design with one stated aim, which was to keep its own weight down.

An upending frame able to change its length, so that piles of different sizes can be raised on the same tool.

And two sets of storage cradles whose saddles adjust, stackable in extra layers when more piles have to ride out to the field on one trip.

The contract was signed in the summer of 2023 and the spread was due on board by the end of the following year, fast for equipment built to order.

Every ton saved on the tool is a ton available for the cargo.

What the foundations themselves measure

Ninety five went in off the Suffolk coast, roughly 43 miles out.

They run between about 220 and 279 feet in length, up to roughly 35 feet across, and weigh between about 1,323 and 1,985 short tons each.

The one that made news sat at the top of that range, and its record is narrower than most coverage suggests. It is the largest installed from a jack up vessel in Europe, not the largest anywhere by any method.

On top of each pile sits a transition piece, 95 of those as well, each about 66 feet tall, 26 feet across and over 441 short tons.

The last foundation went in during the final week of August, which closed a campaign that began in the spring of the previous year.

The pile is the visible record. The tolerance is the real one.

Why the whole arrangement was designed to be removed

This is the detail that explains the design choices above, and it is almost never reported.

The same vessel is scheduled to install the turbines on these foundations. A gripper and a set of pile cradles are useless for that work and would sit on deck as dead weight.

So permanent fittings were kept to a minimum and the spread was built to demobilize, which is also why weight mattered enough to redesign a gripper over.

A ship that can switch roles is worth more than one that cannot, in a market where installation vessels are scarcer than steel.

The machines going on top belong to the same generation as the recyclable blade now flying on a Danish project.

The gripper, the upending frame and the adjustable cradles are described by a wind title.

Equipment that comes off is equipment that earns twice.

What is underneath all of it

This stretch of seabed is sandbank country, and sandbanks are where sandeels live.

Fishing for them was closed in English waters of the North Sea and in all Scottish waters from the spring of 2024, which is narrower than the blanket ban often described.

It did not stay settled. An arbitration panel ruled in spring 2025 that the Scottish closure stood on its science, while the English one failed a proportionality test under the trade agreement next door.

Meanwhile 95 steel tubes and their rock aprons have turned swept sand into hard structure, which is a change of habitat rather than a loss of one.

Cod moved into exactly that kind of new hard ground when researchers laid pipe reefs beside a Dutch foundation.

The pile dimensions, the weights and the record claim are set out by the developer.

The monopile gripper has gone back to the yard, and the sand it worked over is not sand in 95 places.
