Turn on a faucet in New York City and cold, clear water arrives in about a second. Most people assume a pump somewhere nearby is doing the work. The real story starts 85 miles away, somewhere in the forested hills above the Catskill Mountains, and it involves one of the most extraordinary feats of civil engineering ever attempted in America.

A second world carved beneath the surface

Picture a circular passage wide enough to park a school bus inside, bored through solid mountain bedrock. It runs for 85 continuous miles, farther than the distance from Washington D.C. to Philadelphia, without a single break.

The tunnel drops in places to 2,500 feet below the surface. That is roughly the height of eight Statues of Liberty stacked on top of each other, pointed straight down into the earth.

Workers sank 31 separate shafts to access different sections at the same time, then carved inward through the rock using drills and dynamite. The whole structure was lined with concrete and engineered to last for generations.

The staggering journey the water makes every day

The route begins at the Rondout Reservoir in Ulster County, deep in the Catskills, where four mountain reservoirs feed into the system. From there, the water begins a long southward glide toward the city.

Along the way, it threads beneath the Hudson River, traveling through an inverted siphon cut 600 feet under the riverbed. The water rises again on the far bank and continues toward Yonkers without losing a step.

By the time it reaches the Hillview Reservoir in Westchester County, it has traveled through a living wilderness. The Catskill watershed above shelters black bears, beavers, bald eagles and more than 60 fish species, all sustained by the same forests that keep the water clean.

The invisible engine that has powered it for 80 years

Here is the detail that stops most engineers in their tracks: no pumping station drives the main flow.

Since it was put into service, the aqueduct has delivered about half of New York City’s water supply using only gravity to carry the water from four reservoirs in the eastern Catskills.

Gravity alone moves roughly 600 million gallons of water every single day.

The tunnel was also built during World War II, and crews reinforced sections to be bombproof. It has run without stopping for over eight decades, feeding a city that never sleeps and never stops drinking.

New York City is one of only five large cities in the country with a surface drinking water supply that does not utilize filtration as a form of treatment.

The forested watershed above the tunnel does the cleaning that treatment plants do elsewhere.

The world’s longest tunnel has been leaking for decades

This is the reveal that engineers have known about since 1988, and that most New Yorkers have never heard: the Delaware Aqueduct, the longest tunnel on Earth, has been hemorrhaging water for nearly 40 years.

Leaks were first discovered in 1988, with water losses reaching up to 36 million US gallons per day. That is enough water to fill more than 50 Olympic swimming pools, vanishing into the bedrock every 24 hours.

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection built a 2.5-mile bypass tunnel beneath the Hudson River to route around the leak. Construction began in November 2013, and the bypass alone cost close to a billion dollars.

The repair required crews to bore 600 feet beneath the Hudson, the first such tunnel under that river since 1957. The sheer depth and precision involved put this project in a category almost nothing else in American infrastructure can touch.

The tunnel that keeps a city alive is being stitched back together

The northern section of the tunnel was shut down in September 2024 so the bypass could be connected to the original aqueduct. For the first time in 80 years, the great pipe went dark.

Engineers planned the shutdown the way surgeons plan an operation: timing it for October when city water demand drops, pre-filling backup reservoirs, and installing a stop-go switch so crews could restore flow within days if drought threatened the supply.

The Catskill Aqueduct and the Croton system stood in as backup carriers, proving that the city built its water network with enough redundancy to survive its own repairs. Even light pollution from the sprawling metro above has less reach into the deep reservoir valleys, where darkness still protects the nocturnal wildlife of the watershed.

The Delaware Aqueduct is not a glamorous structure. Nobody photographs it, nobody tours it.

But 9 million people wake up every morning, pour a glass of water, and trust a tunnel they will never see with the most basic thing their body needs. That, in the end, is the most remarkable engineering story in America.
