So, what am I talking about? Mercedes-Benz has invented a solar paint technology that can recharge electric cars on the go by utilising sunlight. What this means is that the solar paint transforms the entire vehicle’s exterior into something like a solar panel, allowing the car to generate electricity to power the engine even while driving. How solar paint works: Converting automobiles into mobile power plants
The whole concept is simple yet sophisticated and groundbreaking at the same time. This is different from your typical and traditional solar panels that are heavy; photovoltaic nanoparticles, which can absorb and transform sunlight into power, are added to this paint. Therefore, when applied or painted, the vehicle automatically gets power from the sun continuously.
According to Mercedes, a car like that might generate enough energy to travel 12,500 miles annually in the sun-drenched city of Los Angeles. A city with more clouds, like Stuttgart, Germany, receives 7,500 miles of sunshine annually. Mercedes just states that the photovoltaic paste is made of easily accessible, non-toxic basic materials and does not contain silicon or rare earth elements.
To deliver electricity to the batteries or straight to the motors, each body panel must be galvanically isolated and connected to a power converter. The solar material is covered with a paint made of nanoparticles, which provides a wide range of colour options and lets 94% of the sun’s energy reach the photovoltaic coating. More energy is captured by darker colours than by lighter ones.
The coated body panels can convert sunlight into electricity with an efficiency of up to 20%. That is comparable to solar panels that are now sold commercially. What is also a green flag is that one does not need to worry when there is no sunlight. Even on cloudy days, the paint works and the car operates effectively. It does not rely on the sun always.
