Forget heavy tools or backbreaking excavation. No digging was required here. The bare bones lay scattered across the floor, waiting patiently for discovery.
Polished by water and stained a deep, rusty red, these fossils rested openly along the streambed.
Paleontologist John Moretti described the scene as a floor covered in bones. It felt less like a dark cavern and more like a pristine archaeological archive.

It actually preserved a lost ecosystem from around 100,000 years ago.
A warmer interglacial period during the now infamous Ice Age. And the bones told an ancient story of life in Central Texas.
Researchers found evidence of a giant tortoise, much, much larger than the modern species we know.
They found evidence of a pampathere. A huge armadillo relative the size of a lion.
They also identified claws from a ground sloth. As well as teeth and bone fragments from saber-toothed cats.
Weirdly, they found evidence of camels and mastodons, too.
Not frozen in ice, but preserved by water
Together, these findings pointed to a diverse Ice Age ecosystem.
Central Texas was a far different place at the time. And the discovery of these bones raises an even bigger question.
