A blade cannot be a room.
It is a curved hollow beam that tapers along its whole length, so any floor you put inside it is narrow at one end and useless at the other.
The housing behind it is different.
That box is already roughly rectangular, already weathertight, and already built to keep salt and frost out of expensive machinery for twenty years.
So somebody moved into one.
A shell that came down in Austria now holds a kitchen, a bathroom and a bed inside 376 square feet, and its makers say 10,000 more are out there.
Why the box was always the reusable part
Reuse works when the shape survives.
Grinding a composite into powder destroys the fibers that gave it strength, so whatever comes out the other end is worth far less than what went in.
A nacelle keeps its shape for free.
It arrives with a flat floor, a load bearing frame, a sealed skin and a roof, which means the conversion is subtraction and fitting out rather than manufacture.
Weatherproofing is already paid for.
The shell spent two decades keeping salt spray and frost off a gearbox, so the envelope a builder would otherwise have to construct came down the tower attached.
Size is what decides it.
The architects describe this generation as just large enough to be habitable, with earlier machines too small to bother with and later ones offering considerably more room.
The one that came down in Austria
It went up in 2005.
A two megawatt machine on a 330 foot tower at a wind farm in Gols, in the flat eastern corner of Austria near the Hungarian border.
It ran for twenty years.
Over that working life the turbine produced about 73 gigawatt hours, which is roughly a year of household electricity for 29,000 homes rather than an annual figure.
Austria retired it on schedule.
Twenty years is the working life that generation was designed for, and the machines coming down now were built within a handful of years of each other, which is why they arrive together.
Then it came down in pieces.
The housing alone measures about 32 feet long by thirteen wide by ten high, which is more floor than a lot of city studio apartments have.
What is actually inside it now
The machinery came out first.
Generator, gearbox, shaft and controls were stripped, leaving the shell and its frame and nothing that needed to keep turning.
Then it was built like a house.
Airtight seams, heavy insulation and triple glazed windows went in, with the bathroom and kitchen clustered together so the plumbing and wiring runs stay short.
The finish is deliberately plain.
Pale plywood on the walls and a ceiling of recycled felt made from drinks bottles, chosen partly for acoustics inside a curved shell that would otherwise ring.
The services are all on the roof.
Four solar panels rated at 1,800 watts peak, a solar boiler for hot water and an air to air heat pump handle everything the building needs.
Where the number comes from
Ten thousand is a striking figure.
It is also not an inventory taken by anybody independent, and knowing who said it changes how much weight it can carry.
The source is a partner in the project.
The architect who converted the shell helped start a company in 2023 specifically to commercialize this idea, and that same person supplied the ten thousand figure.
Interest is not the same as dishonesty.
Nobody has hidden anything, and the figure may well be right, but a number that comes from the party who benefits from it belongs in quotation marks rather than in a headline.
That does not make it wrong.
The manufacturer built this model in enormous numbers and the fleet really is retiring, but the tiny house exists in the architects own words to prove that any nacelle could become something.
The wall is a low loader, not a drawing
Every one of them has to travel.
A shell that size moves on a heavy trailer with a permit, and it cannot be folded, stacked or broken down into anything smaller on the way.
That cost sits before the design.
Converting one is cheap next to hauling it across a country to a buyer, which is why the team keeps saying simple adaptation methods matter more than clever ones.
The alternative is still winning.
Blade waste alone is projected to reach 43 million tons worldwide by 2050, and most of what comes down today goes to a landfill or a cement kiln.
One house is not a market.
It is a demonstrator the utility can point at, built to show the conversion works, which is a different claim from saying it scales.
Which is the part worth holding onto.
One turbine housing became somewhere to live, and the other ten thousand are still bolted to the tops of towers.
