The Korean automotive sales leader, Hyundai, has been around the block a few times. Founded in 1947, but only established in 1967 as the company we all know today. In 1975, the company unveiled the first of its own models, the Pony. Now, 50 years later, Hyundai unveils its latest project. Thanks to a specific fuel, their latest project boasts 201 HP and a 400-mile range.

Hyundai unveils its latest project

The Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang hosted a “Clearly Committed” event in 2024, where the Korean automotive company unveiled its latest project. The model is dubbed Initium, which is Latin for “first” or “beginning.” A highly suitable name, as this passenger fuel-cell model represents “a new beginning” for the company. However, it is not the first time one of their models has been powered by this particular fuel.

“Our challenge began from the manufacturing stage, where we pushed the formability of steel to the extreme to create a form of art. With INITIUM, we’ve crafted a more SUV-like design that is both solid and safe, reflecting our dedication to our customers through ‘customer-centric design.” – SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai and Genesis Global Design

The fuel behind the Initium powertrain

The company has been using this fuel as a powertrain for nearly 27 years, with Initium representing its new beginning in a society driven by renewable energy sources. With the increasing pressure to adhere to the global carbon-free mission, this fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) will not only be an eco-friendly pioneer but also stylish and powerful.

“Hyundai Motor’s clear, unwavering commitment to hydrogen over the past 27 years is rooted in our belief in its potential as a clean, accessible and therefore fair energy source for everyone. We are dedicated to pioneering a future where hydrogen is used by everyone, in everything, and everywhere. We invite you to join us on this journey.” – Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company

The Initium FCEV will thus be the latest representation of the company’s vision, “a future driven by hydrogen.” Committing to clean energy sources is not always easy, especially when maintaining a vehicle’s aesthetics and performance. Luckily, the Initium will sport eccentric lighting, polished elegance, and strong dimensions. It has a perceptible SUV-like aesthetic, and thanks to its rugged roof rack, you can seamlessly transition from the urban lifestyle to the more adventurous outdoors.

All the features of Initium to look forward to

The Initium model is not just about looks, as it’s what’s on the inside that counts, particularly its driving range and performance. According to Hyundai’s target fuel economy, the model will be equipped with massive hydrogen fuel tanks and aerodynamic 21-inch wheels, which magnify its range to more than 650 km (404 miles) on a single fill-up.

Last but not least, it has impressive performance, with smooth acceleration and overtaking capabilities. The hydrogen FCEV will have an electric motor output of 150 kW. Also sporting 201 HP, the Initium will be perfect for the fast life.

Additional features

  • A FCEV-specific route planner to find charging stations en route
  • Identifying station location accessibility, operating status, as well as the total number of waiting vehicles
  • Hydrogen fuel cells provide power with zero emissions
  • Can power and charge numerous household appliances and personal devices via the concept’s Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) feature
  • Has an outdoor terminal designed to connect directly to a 220V household outlet
  • Has a multi-skeleton structure at the front, a side body structure, and nine airbags, ensuring world-class collision safety performance

Before you rush to exchange your vehicle for this latest hydrogen powertrain, note that it was predicted to arrive in production form in the first half of this year. It seems hydrogen is still the future of the automotive industry.
