The iconic sports car brand Porsche is making headlines for all the right reasons. In celebration of what has been a storied journey for this brand, they are paying homage to their clientele and creators by releasing the Vision 357 concept car. It draws on the seminal 356 model, with one variant powered by synthetic e-fuel and another by electricity. A new fuel is in the works.
75 years steeped in history with a fuel of the future
The brand’s first-ever production car was the 356 No. 1 Roadster, which was released in 1948. The concept was first revealed at Porsche’s ’75 Years of Porsche Sports Cars’ exhibition in Berlin to much high praise. A carefully constructed harmony between heritage and innovation is embodied in the sleek and aggressive design of this vehicle. Porsche Designer Michael Mauer said:
“We created a very special birthday present … an attempt to combine the past, present, and future.”
It is a definite looker flaunting a widened silhouette and minimalist features. The real genius lies beneath its hood. The 718 Cayman GT4 RS platform, including a 4.0-liter flat-six engine, runs on a synthetic e-fuel that was created at a pilot facility in Chile. This fusion of the past and the future has fans and critics alike salivating at the prospect of this commemorative offering.
Carbon harnessed from the atmosphere and renewable hydrogen set this synthetic e-fuel apart from regular gasoline. This enables the Vision 357 to achieve combustion with near-zero net CO₂ emissions. A delicate dalliance between power and sustainability. The tank cap sports an e-fuel label, which can be viewed as Porsche conceding to the importance of electric-powered motors while still suggesting that combustion has a role to play in this era of sustainability.
The Porsche coupe is coupled with a speedster
They drive this dual outlook home further with the release of the Vision 357 Speedster, a daring accompaniment to the Vision 357, which was unveiled a few months after its sibling at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Again, forgoing traditional fuel, this all-electric system is opted for in the Speedster, with the flat-six engine taking a backseat to a system inspired by Porsche’s e-Performance units, flaunting battery and motor power from the 718 GT4 e-Performance.
The Speedster screams classic, from the subtleties of the cockpit, the stylish low windshield, and concealed headlights, all of which harken to the era of Porsche that is gone but never forgotten.
A contemplation of the future for Porsche with a new fuel direction
These concepts artfully contemplate the future of the automotive industry. Showing a combustion system with low emissions alongside an all-electric speedster demonstrates this, all while adhering to and advancing the vaunted flair for design that has made Porsche a standout brand for decades. Mauer explained:
“Taking a look back at our tradition with a future concept car is not as paradoxical as it might seem.”
Heritage might be rooted in history at Porsche, but it is not confined to the past, as both the concepts so skilfully reveal. Marking 75 years of pioneering excellence in this manner is daring to say the least.
Alas, neither of the Vision concepts is going to be produced, but they do signal the direction Porsche is looking to take in the years to come. On one hand, a definitive attempt to safeguard the overlooked combustion engine with their innovative e-fuel, and then, of course, an electric powertrain that has both conservation and performance in mind.
As to which outlook will form the focus of this brand, only time will tell. Both are well within their wheelhouse, and celebrating the longevity of their brand in this fashion is as iconic as anything to have emerged from this brand in the past, with a dazzling future ahead.
