A chasm in the Alps on the border between France and Italy, a rope dropping away into the dark.

About 425 feet down, the shaft opens into a chamber holding an underground glacier that never melts.

On that ice stands a tent, a wooden pallet to keep it off the wet, a stack of supply crates and a field telephone.

A young man climbs down in the middle of July carrying no watch, no calendar and nothing that shows daylight.

He comes out two months later.

He thinks it has been about one.

What the body does when nothing tells it the time

The human sleep and wake cycle does not run on the sun. It runs on an internal oscillator that the sun merely corrects each morning.

Remove the correction and the oscillator keeps going on its own period, which for most people is slightly longer than a day.

Here it settled at roughly 24 hours and 30 minutes, which sounds trivial and is not.

Half an hour of drift per cycle compounds. Across two months it accumulates into days, and the person living inside it notices nothing at all.

His feet were wet for most of two months, his equipment was soaked through within days, and he later described the physical experience as close to unbearable.

That complicates the result rather than voiding it. Cold and exhaustion plausibly contributed to the time distortion, and the experiment cannot separate the two.

Agencies planning long sealed missions took an interest for an obvious reason. A crew whose internal day drifts half an hour will eventually be awake when the schedule says asleep.
